Chapter 2 - The Ground Shifts Beneath Him

Back in the clinic, the silence finally shattered. Nicole began sobbing, trying to reach for Jason, but he pulled away from her as if her touch burned. His face had gone from stunned to pale to a deep, angry red.

“Explain it,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. He turned his glare on Nicole, all the warmth he’d shown her minutes earlier replaced by cold fury. “Tell me she’s wrong. Tell me this is some kind of mistake.”

“It’s not a mistake,” Dr. Harrison said gently but firmly. “I’ve run the tests twice. The dating also doesn’t align with the timeline you provided, Mr. Carter. This pregnancy began several weeks before you claim your relationship with Ms. Reed became intimate.”

Eleanor found her voice then, sharp and shrill, her carefully cultivated composure cracking. “What is the meaning of this? Nicole, you told us this child was Jason’s! You told us this would secure our legacy!”

“I thought it was!” Nicole cried, tears streaming down her face. “Jason, I swear, I didn’t know—there was one night, I was drunk, I didn’t think—”

“One night?” Jason roared, the sound echoing off the walls. “You’ve been lying to me for months! You let me believe this was my child, you let my family believe it, you made me throw away my wife and my children for this?”

He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, his mind reeling. The divorce papers—he’d signed them without reading a single clause, so eager to get to this moment. He’d told me to keep the house, the bank accounts, whatever I wanted, convinced his real future was here. “If you want the kids, keep them,” he’d said, “They’ll only slow me down.”

The words echoed in his head now, sounding not just careless but catastrophic. He’d dismissed his own flesh and blood as a burden, traded them for a lie. And what had he traded them for? A woman who’d been carrying another man’s child, a future that didn’t exist, a humiliation that would follow him and his family for years.

Lauren pushed off the wall, her voice sharp with panic. “Jason, we need to think about this. The press—if word gets out—”

“Who cares about the press right now?” Jason snapped, though he knew exactly how much his family cared about their image. The Carters didn’t have scandals; they buried them. But this wasn’t something that could be buried with money or influence. Not easily.

Eleanor’s face had hardened into something cold and unforgiving. She looked at Nicole with utter contempt. “Get out. You will never darken the door of this family again. If you so much as breathe a word of this to anyone, we will ruin you. Do you understand?”

Nicole stared at them, horrified, realizing that in the space of a single sentence, she’d lost everything—the man, the status, the security she’d schemed to get. She opened her mouth to protest, but one look at Eleanor’s icy gaze silenced her. She climbed off the table, grabbed her things, and fled the room in tears.

Jason stood alone in the center of the room, his world spinning. He thought of me, walking out of the law office, calm and collected, laying our children’s passports on the desk. “To Milan,” I’d said. He’d laughed then, convinced I had no money, no plan, no way to survive without him. Now he wondered—had I known? Had I planned this? The way I’d looked at him, so calm, so free… it hadn’t been the look of a defeated woman. It had been the look of someone who held all the cards.

“Dawson,” he muttered, the name popping into his head. The driver had mentioned Attorney Dawson. Who was Dawson? And what had I been planning all along?

He pulled out his phone, his hands shaking slightly, and tried to call me. It went straight to voicemail. He called the house—no answer. He called his assistant. “Find out what flight my ex-wife was on. Find out where she’s staying in Milan. And get me Attorney Collins—now.”

He’d signed those papers without reading them. What had he agreed to? What had he given away? For the first time in his life, Jason Carter felt true, gut-wrenching fear. He’d always believed his family name and his fortune made him untouchable. But as he stood in that clinic room, the ghost of his arrogance mocking him, he realized he’d just handed me the power to destroy everything he cared about.

And halfway across the world, as the sun began to set over the ocean, I smiled again. I didn’t know exactly what was happening in that clinic room, but I knew the truth had been revealed. I knew Jason’s perfect future had just turned to ash. And I knew this was only the beginning.
