Chapter 9 - The Crack in the Foundation

As Voss began to make his presence felt, the pressure mounted. Dawson reported that attempts to dig into my life and Nicole’s had intensified, and subtle attempts at intimidation became more frequent. But we were prepared. We’d secured the evidence in multiple safe locations, both digital and physical, and had made it clear that anything happened to either of us, everything would be released immediately to the authorities and the press.
This stalemate created tension within the Carter family. Jason grew increasingly vocal in his opposition to Voss’s involvement, arguing that escalating things would only make the situation worse, that they should negotiate instead of threaten. His father and mother dismissed his concerns, calling him weak and naive.
“You don’t understand how the world works,” Richard told him gruffly. “Sometimes you have to do unpleasant things to protect what’s yours. Voss will take care of this, and then we can finally put this whole mess behind us.”
But Jason did understand. He understood that his parents had made a deal with the devil decades earlier, and now the devil was demanding his due. He began to quietly investigate on his own, digging into the parts of the family history his parents had always kept hidden. What he found horrified him.
He learned that the “miraculous” turnaround of the company eleven years earlier had come at a terrible price. Voss had arranged the financing, but in exchange, he’d gained significant influence over the company and over the family itself. He learned that the business partner who had once threatened to expose them hadn’t just retired—he’d been forced out, his reputation destroyed, his life ruined by Voss’s tactics. He learned that his parents had known about Voss’s methods all along, had accepted them, had even encouraged them, all in the name of protecting the family name and the family fortune.
And he learned something else that shook him to his core: Voss wasn’t just working for them. Over the years, he’d gathered enough evidence against the Carters to destroy them too, effectively holding them hostage. His parents weren’t just protecting their secrets from outsiders—they were also prisoners of the man they’d hired to protect them.
The foundation of everything Jason had ever believed in—his family’s honor, their success, their integrity—crumbled beneath him. The legacy he’d been so proud of, the name he’d worn like armor, was built on corruption and fear. And he realized that his own choices—his arrogance, his infidelity, his careless dismissal of me and the children—had been the crack that had allowed all this rot to finally see the light.
He decided he couldn’t stay silent anymore. He contacted me, this time not to plead or threaten, but to talk.
“I know what my parents have done,” he said quietly when we spoke. “I know what Voss is capable of. I know they’re willing to hurt you, to hurt anyone, to keep their secrets. I don’t expect you to forgive me. But I can’t let this go on. I’m not on their side anymore. I’ll help you. I’ll give you everything I have, everything I’ve found. Whatever happens… the truth needs to come out. And I need to make sure my children don’t grow up believing this family’s lies are something to be proud of.”
His decision sent shockwaves through the family. When his parents found out he was turning against them, Eleanor wept and accused him of betrayal, while Richard cut him off from the company and disavowed him publicly. Lauren chose her parents’ side, calling Jason a fool and a traitor.

But Jason stood firm. For the first time in his life, he was doing what he believed was right, not what was expected of him or what served his own interests. And with his help, the full picture of the Carter family’s deception finally came into focus. The pieces all fit together, forming a damning portrait of power, corruption, and the terrible cost of maintaining a perfect image.
The stage was set for the final act. The secrets the Carters had buried for so long were about to be dragged into the light. And nothing would ever be the same again.
