Chapter 8 - Nicole’s Shadow Returns

Just when it seemed things might settle into an uneasy stalemate, the past returned in a way no one expected. Nicole, who had disappeared from Chicago after the devastating revelation at the clinic, resurfaced—and she wasn’t alone or empty-handed.

After being cast aside by the Carters, she’d been angry and desperate. She’d lost the status and security she’d schemed for, and she blamed Jason and his family as much as she blamed herself. In the weeks that followed, she’d done some digging of her own, and she’d uncovered secrets of her own—secrets that tied directly to the web of deception surrounding the Carter family.

She reached out to Jason first, demanding money and protection in exchange for her silence. She had proof, she claimed, of things that would make what I held look small by comparison. When Jason refused to meet her demands, angry that she had the audacity to threaten him after all she’d done, she took a different approach: she contacted me.

We met in a neutral location, a quiet café in Zurich, arranged through intermediaries so neither of us could be accused of impropriety. She looked different than she had when I’d seen her in photographs—no longer polished and confident, but sharp, bitter, and determined.

“I know you hate me,” she said without preamble as she sat down across from me. “And you have every right. I took your husband, I tried to take your place. I was selfish, I was stupid. But the Carters threw me away like garbage when I was no longer useful to them. And I’m not going to let them get away with it.”

She slid a folder across the table. Inside were records, emails, even recorded conversations, all proving that the Carter family’s dealings with Marcus Voss went far beyond financial irregularities. They showed that Voss had been involved in silencing critics, manipulating competitors, and that Eleanor and Richard had known about and approved of his actions for decades. They also revealed something even more shocking: the man who was the biological father of Nicole’s baby was none other than Marcus Voss’s own nephew, a man with ties to the same shadowy world Voss operated in.

“Jason didn’t just make a mistake with me,” Nicole said bitterly. “His whole family is rotten. They use people, they destroy people, and then they act like they’re better than everyone else. I don’t expect you to trust me. But this information is real. And together, we could make sure they finally pay for what they’ve done.”

I looked through the documents, my mind racing. This changed everything. What I had was damaging; what she had was catastrophic. If this came out, the Carters wouldn’t just face financial ruin or public shame—they could face criminal charges.

I didn’t trust Nicole. Her motives were clearly driven by revenge, not justice. But her information was too important to ignore. I told her I would review the evidence and verify its authenticity, but I wouldn’t make any promises about how it would be used.

When word reached the Carters that Nicole had contacted me, panic set in. Richard and Eleanor knew exactly what she was capable of revealing. They decided it was time to bring Marcus Voss in to “handle the problem.”

Voss arrived at the Carter estate a few days later, a charming, ruthless man with a cold smile and eyes that missed nothing. He listened to their concerns, nodded calmly, and assured them he would take care of everything.

“These women are a nuisance,” he said smoothly. “They think they hold power because they have a few pieces of paper. But they don’t understand how this world works. I’ll make sure they understand the consequences of crossing this family. No one threatens the Carters and gets away with it.”

His words were calm, but the threat beneath them was clear. Jason watched him, a growing sense of unease settling in his stomach. He’d always known Voss was a man his parents relied on for “delicate matters,” but he’d never before seen the man up close, never fully understood the darkness that clung to him. He realized with a jolt that his parents weren’t just trying to protect their secrets—they were willing to use dangerous people and dangerous methods to do it. And I, and even Nicole, were now in real danger.

For the first time, Jason found himself torn between loyalty to his family and the need to protect the mother of his children from the very danger his parents were courting. The lines between right and wrong, between family and justice, were blurring beyond recognition. And he knew that soon, he would have to choose a side.
