Chapter 1 - THE CALM BEFORE THE STORMThe night wind off the Hudson River carried a sharp, freezing edge, but Nora felt none of it. She stood on the balcony of Hawthorne Hall, listening to the muffled sounds of laughter and clinking crystal floating through the glass doors behind her. Inside, Evelyn Hawthorne was holding court, surrounded by high-society sycophants who measured human worth entirely by net worth and pedigree.

Sophie Hawthorne lingered near the balcony door, clutching a silk shawl around her shoulders. She looked at Nora with a mixture of pity and admiration. "Nora, you don't have to go through with this tomorrow," Sophie whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "My mother... she breaks people. She broke my father years ago, and she’s trying to do the same to you. Daniel loves you, but he's too weak to stand up to her when his precious business deals are on the line."

Nora turned her head, her dark eyes reflecting the faint starlight. "Your brother is torn between two worlds, Sophie. But he will make his choice tomorrow."

"And what about you?" Sophie asked, coming closer. "Why do you endure this? You could have walked away three weeks ago when my mother moved you into the servants' quarters."

"Because enduring a trial reveals who people truly are," Nora replied smoothly. Her tone was devoid of anger, bitterness, or distress. It was the calm, measured voice of a monarch observing subjects from a great height. "A house built on gold and pride looks grand, Sophie, until the foundation turns out to be sand."

Before Sophie could digest those words, the balcony doors swung open. Daniel stepped out, running a hand through his dark hair. He looked exhausted, his phone still tightly gripped in his hand.

"Nora, I'm so sorry," Daniel began, approaching her with anxious eyes. "The board was panicking over the European acquisition. I had to manage them. My mother... what she said at dinner was entirely out of line. I'm going to tell her right now that she needs to apologize."

Nora looked at him. She saw a man who truly cared for her, but a man who had spent thirty years chained to his family's toxic expectations. "Don't bother, Daniel. Words meant to apologize under duress mean nothing. Go finish your work. Tomorrow is our wedding day."

"You aren't mad?" Daniel asked, looking bewildered.

"I am observant," Nora said gently. "Get some sleep, Daniel. Tomorrow, the world will look very different."

After Daniel left, Nora returned to her small, unheated room above the garage—the room Evelyn had banished her to in an attempt to humiliate her. She did not complain to the staff. She did not ask for extra blankets. Instead, she sat by the narrow window, retrieved her encrypted satellite phone, and opened a secure file.

On the screen was a detailed dossier on Hawthorne Capital. For three months, under the guise of an unassuming bookstore clerk, Princess Helena of the Grand Duchy of Valenbourg had observed the man who had pulled her out of a sudden downpour in Manhattan six months ago. She had fallen in love with Daniel's warmth, his idealism, and his sharp mind. But she had also seen the viper's nest he called a family.

Her brother, Crown Prince Adrian, had insisted on a test: live as a commoner, reveal no titles, and see if the Hawthorne family possessed a shred of true nobility or merely wealthy arrogance.

The test was over. The Hawthornes had failed spectacularly.

At 3:00 AM, a quiet chime sounded on her phone. A text flashed from Prince Adrian: The sovereign fleet has entered U.S. airspace under diplomatic clearance. Five heavy transport helicopters and the Royal Guard honor escort are staged at JFK. We land at Hawthorne Hall at 11:00 AM sharp. Be ready, dear sister.

Nora smoothed down her simple cotton nightgown, lay back on the thin mattress, and closed her eyes. Tomorrow, the wolves would realize they had been picking on a dragon.
