Chapter 2 - THE BRIDAL SUITE HUMILIATIONMorning broke over the New York hills in a blaze of autumn gold and orange. Hawthorne Hall burst into chaos as florists, caterers, and decorators scrambled across the expansive lawns. Over two million dollars had been spent on the wedding setup—not to honor Nora, but to showcase the immense wealth of the Hawthorne empire to five hundred high-profile guests, including senators, corporate titans, and foreign diplomats.

At 8:00 AM, Evelyn Hawthorne strode into the grand dressing room. She wore a tailored emerald dress that cost more than a average worker's annual salary, and her posture radiated cold authority. Madison Sterling followed closely behind her, sipping an iced latte and looking triumphant.

Nora sat in front of a modest vanity mirror. Evelyn had refused to hire a professional makeup artist or hair stylist for Nora, claiming all the hired staff were reserved for the Hawthorne family and high-value guests.

"Still here, I see," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she leaned against the marble doorway. "I thought perhaps you would have taken the check I left on your table last night and slipped away in the dark."

Nora didn't turn around. She calmly adjusted a plain silver hairpin. "I saw the check, Mrs. Hawthorne. Five hundred thousand dollars to walk away."

"A fortune for a girl who makes twelve dollars an hour organizing paperbacks," Madison chimed in, stepping forward to look at Nora's modest white off-the-rack wedding dress hanging from the closet door. "Honestly, Nora, that dress looks like something off a bargain rack at a suburban mall. The contrast between you and Daniel is going to be embarrassing. People will think Hawthorne Capital is sponsoring a charity case."

Evelyn chuckled. "Let them see it. It will remind Daniel of the mistake he is making. By noon today, he will realize that love cannot buy entry into the inner circles of world power."

Evelyn walked up behind Nora, placing her manicured hands heavily on Nora’s shoulders. "Listen to me very carefully, child. You may walk down that aisle today. You may even sign the marriage license. But you will never be a Hawthorne. You will sit at the edge of our lives, an unseen shadow, until Daniel grows bored and discards you. My son belongs to high society. You belong in the mud."

Nora met Evelyn’s cold eyes through the mirror reflection. Her expression was serene, almost pitying.

"True nobility isn't bought with defense contracts or private equity, Mrs. Hawthorne," Nora said softly. "It is shown in how you treat those who can do nothing for you."

"Save your philosophical drivel for your books!" Evelyn snapped, losing her composure for a split second before smoothing her skirt. "Get dressed. The guests are arriving. And don't dare step into the main parlor until you are called."

As Evelyn and Madison swept out of the room, Sophie slipped inside, closing the door quietly behind her. In her arms, she held a stunning vintage veil made of delicate Belgian lace.

"I stole this from my grandmother's chest in the attic," Sophie said, her eyes shining with tears. "My mother wanted Madison to wear it if she married Daniel. Please, Nora... take it. I know it isn't much, but I want you to have something beautiful today."

Nora felt a genuine warmth touch her heart. She stood up and embraced the younger woman. "Thank you, Sophie. You have a kind heart. Keep that heart, no matter what happens today."

Downstairs, black limousines began pouring through the massive iron gates of Hawthorne Estate. Billionaires, governors, and CEOs poured out onto the lawn, taking their seats under a massive glass pavilion erected over the manicured gardens.

At 10:30 AM, Daniel entered his private dressing room, wearing a bespoke tuxedo. His father, Charles, was pouring a glass of scotch in the corner.

"Dad," Daniel said, adjusting his bowtie. "Is Mother going to behave today?"

Charles took a slow sip, refusing to meet his son's eyes. "Your mother does what is necessary to protect this family's image, Daniel. You chose a girl from nowhere. You brought this tension upon yourself."

"She isn't from nowhere!" Daniel shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "She's intelligent, kind, and grounded! She's the only real thing in my life!"

"Then prepare to pay the price for reality," Charles said coldly. "Because after today, the board will question your judgment. Madison's father has already pulled his venture capital firm from our upcoming fund."

Daniel sank into a chair, burying his face in his hands. He loved Nora, but the immense pressure of his world was slowly crushing him. He had no idea that in less than thirty minutes, the world he knew would be completely shattered.
