Chapter 2 - The Concierge’s Secret Ally

Ten minutes later, I walked out of the suite and back down to the grand lobby. My exterior was calm, composed, and utterly masked, though an internal fire raged through my veins. The tropical heat hitting the glass doors of the lobby felt heavy, thick with the chaos of Bangkok morning traffic.

The same receptionist who had given me the devastating news earlier watched me approach the mahogany front desk. Her expression was a mixture of professional detachment and deep, empathetic pity.

"Mrs. Vance," she began gently, leaning forward. "If you need assistance contacting the local embassy—"

"I don't need the embassy, Sarah," I interrupted, using her name from her lapel tag. My voice was low, steady, and carried an authority that made her instantly blink in surprise.

She looked at me closely, noticing the sudden absence of panic in my posture. "Ma'am?"

I slid my wedding band off my left ring finger and placed it squarely on the marble counter. The platinum and diamond band glinted under the crystal chandelier.

"I need a secure, encrypted terminal with a direct satellite connection, a temporary burner phone with untraceable local service, and a cup of black coffee," I said, looking her directly in the eyes. "And I know for a fact that the executive suites in this hotel maintain a private, fiber-optic bypass line for high-net-worth corporate clients."

Sarah stared at the ring, then up at my face. The guarded caution in her eyes melted away, replaced by sudden realization. "You aren't just stranded, are you?"

"My husband thought he was leaving a lamb for slaughter," I replied, a faint, cold smile touching the corners of my lips. "He made a grave miscalculation."

Sarah hesitated for only a second before acting with decisive speed. She reached under the counter, retrieving a heavy brass key card and sliding it across the marble toward me, along with a sleek, unbranded smartphone.

"Room 1402 is registered under corporate maintenance," she whispered quickly, glancing around to ensure no other hotel staff were listening. "The terminal inside has an independent fiber connection that bypasses the hotel’s public network entirely. No logs, no tracking. And... Mrs. Vance? For what it's worth, Mr. Vance was one of the most arrogant, unpleasant guests we’ve hosted all year. I hope you destroy him."

"Thank you, Sarah," I said, picking up the key card and the phone. "Keep your phone close. Within the hour, this hotel is going to receive a very large corporate booking from a company called Titan Global. Make sure my name is flagged as VIP."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the private elevator bank, my bare feet stepping soundlessly against the plush carpet. The game had officially begun.
