Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the Gates

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the black Mercedes sedan idled quietly at the wrought-iron security gates of 4428 Maplewood Drive. The estate looked magnificent from the outside—red brick masonry, immaculate English gardens, and towering oak trees that my father had planted decades ago. Derek had always loved showing this house off to his high-society clients and corporate colleagues, frequently hinting at dinner parties that his family's generational wealth had secured the property. He had let everyone in his inner circle believe that he was the master of the manor, the patriarch holding the keys to the kingdom.

He was about to experience a very rude awakening.

Martin sat in the front passenger seat, while I nursed Maisie in the back, her tiny fingers wrapped softly around my thumb. Two federal marshals in plainclothes stood near the main gate alongside our process server, holding a stack of thick legal dossiers stamped with red seals. We didn't even need to use a key; the electronic security codes had already been reset by Martin’s tech team early that morning, locking out all unauthorized profiles—including Derek’s and Vanessa’s.

Ten minutes later, Derek’s Audi Q7 pulled up the private lane. Behind the wheel sat Derek, wearing his expensive Brioni suit, looking relaxed and triumphant. In the passenger seat sat Vanessa Cole, wearing oversized Gucci sunglasses and reapplying her red lipstick, laughing at something Derek had just said. They looked like a picture-perfect modern power couple returning to their private sanctuary after a hard day conquering the corporate ladder.

Derek slammed on the brakes as he saw the blocked driveway and the official vehicles. His face drained of color instantly. He threw the car into park and leaped out, slamming the door behind him.

"What is the meaning of this?" Derek shouted, storming toward our vehicle, his face flushing a furious crimson. "Audrey? What the hell are you doing here with cops and lawyers? Have you lost your damn mind? Making a scene like a hysterical lunatic—my mother was right about you!"

Vanessa stepped out of the Audi more slowly, adjusting her designer handbag, a smug, superior smirk plastered across her face. "Really, Derek, can't you handle your crazy ex? I told you we should have changed the locks permanently the moment she went to the hospital."

I lowered the tinted back window of the Mercedes slowly, looking out at them with absolute calm. I didn't yell. I didn't cry. I simply looked at Derek the way a scientist looks at a particularly uninteresting specimen under a microscope.

"Good afternoon, Derek," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard. "You look surprised. Did you really think you could forge my signature for an $850,000 commercial loan, move your corporate side-piece into my family home, and expect me to just roll over?"

Derek froze, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Forge... what are you talking about? That’s my house! My business! You signed those papers last month!"

"I never signed a damn thing," I replied coldly. "And neither did any authorized representative of the Vance Trust."

Martin stepped out of the Mercedes, holding out a heavy document binder toward Derek and Vanessa. "Mr. Vance, Miss Cole, you are both formally served with an emergency eviction notice, an asset-freezing injunction, and a criminal subpoena for mortgage fraud and identity theft. You have exactly thirty minutes to gather your personal belongings and vacate the premises. Failure to do so will result in immediate physical removal by the authorities."

Vanessa’s smirk vanished instantly. She snatched the top document from Martin’s hands, her eyes scanning the bold legal headings, the federal seal, and the clear identification of the primary property owner. Her face turned chalk white. She slowly turned her head to look at Derek, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal.

"Derek..." she whispered, her voice trembling as the reality of the situation crashed down upon her. "You said this house was yours."
