Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The silence that followed Vanessa’s whispered accusation was thick enough to cut with a knife. For a brief, pathetic moment, Derek tried to maintain his arrogant posture, puffing out his chest and attempting to intimidate Martin, but the desperate panic leaking from his pores betrayed him completely.
"This is a mistake! A clerical error!" Derek stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he grabbed the edge of the legal folder from Vanessa’s shaking hands. "Audrey, honey, let’s not be ridiculous. We can talk about this inside over a cup of coffee. You’re stressed out from the baby, you’re not thinking clearly—"
"Don't you ever call me honey again," I interrupted, stepping out of the Mercedes with Maisie cradled safely against my chest. The afternoon breeze caught my hair, but I didn't flinch. I looked every bit the master of my own domain. "You had seventeen chances to answer my calls while I was bringing your daughter into the world, Derek. You chose to ignore every single one of them to entertain Vanessa in the bed my father bought for me. You thought I was weak. You thought you could steal my inheritance to cover the massive debts of your failing company."
"Mr. Vance," Martin intervened firmly, stepping between Derek and me. "I suggest you look at page fourteen of the injunction. That is the forensic handwriting analysis report commissioned by the state prosecutor's office. It matches your personal IP address to the online portal where the fraudulent loan application was submitted. The federal marshals are already executing a search warrant at your downtown office as we speak. Vanguard Freight Solutions is finished, and your personal assets are currently being cataloged for seizure."
Vanessa let out a sharp, breathless gasp. She dropped her designer handbag right onto the gravel driveway, the contents spilling out across the pavement. The illusion of the high-flying corporate lifestyle—the luxury cars, the designer clothes, the grand estate—was evaporating before her eyes like morning mist. She had hitched her wagon to a man she thought was a wealthy real estate mogul, only to discover he was nothing more than a desperate fraudster about to face federal prison time.
"You lied to me," Vanessa hissed, turning on Derek with sudden, incandescent fury. She shoved him hard in the chest, her fingernails nearly scratching his face. "You told me your wife was a kept dependent with no legal standing! You told me you owned this entire estate free and clear! You dragged me into your criminal mess!"
"Shut up, Vanessa, you absolute idiot!" Derek snarled back, losing his temper entirely as his mask of sophisticated charm completely shattered. "You were right there cheering me on when we spent the first $100,000 of the credit line on your new European sports car! You aren't innocent in this either!"
I watched them tear into each other with a cold, detached satisfaction. People who build their lives on lies, deceit, and the exploitation of others always destroy themselves from the inside out when the pressure mounts. They didn't need my help to self-destruct; they were doing a masterclass job of it right in front of the front gates.
"You have twenty-five minutes left," Martin reminded them, checking his luxury wristwatch with clinical precision. "The moving crew I hired is already pulling up behind your Audi. Every single item of clothing, jewelry, and luxury goods purchased with corporate funds or marital commingled accounts will be cataloged and impounded. I advise you to pack light."

Derek turned his bloodshot eyes toward me, a pathetic mixture of rage and pleading distorting his features. "Audrey, please. We have a child together. You can't do this to me. Think of our family!"
"Our family died the moment you ignored my seventeenth call, Derek," I said softly, looking down at sweet, peaceful Maisie. "Now, get off my property."
