Chapter 4 - The Scramble for Survival

Within twenty minutes, the front courtyard of Maplewood Drive turned into a chaotic spectacle. The private moving van hired by Martin’s firm backed up neatly against the front steps, and two burly movers in blue uniforms stepped out with industrial-sized plastic bins. Derek and Vanessa were forced to pack their expensive clothing, designer shoes, and personal belongings under the watchful eyes of the two federal marshals.
Neighbors had started to peek through their sheer curtains across the quiet, affluent street, whispering behind closed blinds as they watched the disgraced executive and his corporate mistress get systematically dismantled in broad daylight. Ewelina—Derek’s mother, who lived just two suburbs away—must have received an urgent, panicked phone call from her son, because her silver Lexus suddenly screeched to a halt outside the gates.
Evelyn threw open her car door and marched up the driveway, her face twisted in absolute fury. She bypassed Derek entirely and marched straight toward me, pointing a manicured finger right in my face.
"Audrey Vance, have you completely lost your mind?" Evelyn screeched, her voice echoing off the brick facade of the house. "Calling the police and lawyers on your own husband? Throwing him out like a common criminal over a little bit of business restructuring? You are destroying this family's reputation over petty jealousy!"
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply stared at her with the icy composure that had unnerved her from the very beginning.
"Evelyn," I said, my voice cutting through her tirade like a surgical scalpel. "Your son committed federal wire fraud and forgery using my family trust as collateral without my knowledge. He brought his mistress into my bed five days after I gave birth to his child. And you stood in my bedroom telling me not to make a scene. The apple clearly doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?"
"He is a man of vision! He needed capital!" Evelyn shrieked, doubling down on her delusion. "You should be supporting him, not destroying him! A good wife stands by her husband through thick and thin!"
"A good mother teaches her son not to steal, cheat, and commit felonies," Martin stepped in smoothly, holding up a certified copy of the restraining order that covered both Derek and his immediate family members. "Mrs. Vance, if you take one more step onto this property or attempt to harass my client or her newborn child, I will have you arrested for aiding and abetting interstate financial fraud. You have five seconds to return to your vehicle."
Evelyn glared at Martin, then at me, her lips trembling with impotent rage. She realized that the old dynamic—where she could manipulate, gaslight, and control me through sheer intimidation—was dead and buried. The Vance Trust was back under my absolute, unchallengeable control, and the people who had tried to rob me were facing the full weight of the American justice system.
She spat on the pavement, turned on her heel, and stormed back to her silver Lexus, slamming the door so hard I thought the window would shatter. She peeled out of the driveway, kicking up gravel, leaving Derek completely isolated, standing among a pile of plastic storage bins filled with his designer shirts and cheap suits.
Vanessa was already sitting inside the Audi, refusing to look at him or speak another word, her phone pressed urgently against her ear as she desperately called her own divorce attorney or criminal defense counsel.

Martin turned to me, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "The house is secured, Audrey. The locks have been reprogrammed with a new biometric master code. The domestic petition for dissolution of marriage and sole custody of Maisie has been successfully filed with the family court. You are completely safe here."
I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the crisp autumn air of the estate my father had built. The nightmare was over. The parasites were gone. And my true life was finally beginning.
