Chapter 5 - A New Dawn on Maplewood Drive

Three months later, the autumn leaves had turned to a brilliant mosaic of gold and crimson, carpeting the front lawns of Maplewood Drive in vibrant color. Inside the bright, sunlit nursery of the estate, Maisie cooed softly as I gently buttoned her little organic cotton cardigan, her big, curious eyes blinking up at me with absolute trust and boundless love.

A lot had happened in ninety days.

The federal prosecutors moved swiftly on Derek's case. Faced with overwhelming digital evidence, a complete paper trail of forged notarizations, and the sudden cooperation of Vanessa Cole—who turned state's evidence in exchange for a reduced sentence on lesser conspiracy charges—Derek accepted a plea deal. He was currently serving a three-year sentence in a federal minimum-security correctional facility in upstate New York, with a permanent felony record that effectively barred him from ever holding a corporate executive position again.

Evelyn had tried to contest the restraining order, but Martin’s legal team dismantled her efforts in family court within ten minutes, securing a permanent injunction that kept her miles away from both me and Maisie. Vanguard Freight Solutions had been liquidated, its remaining assets auctioned off to satisfy disgruntled creditors, leaving Derek completely bankrupt, stripped of the illusion of wealth he had fought so desperately to maintain.

As for me? I had fully restructured the Vance Family Trust, appointing Martin and myself as the sole permanent trustees. I took over the active management of my father’s commercial real estate portfolio, proving to myself and the business community that I was far more than just a decorative trophy wife. I was a capable, fierce, and independent businesswoman who could protect what was hers.

The doorbell chimed softly through the spacious hallways of the colonial estate.

I scooped Maisie up into my arms, resting her head gently against my shoulder, and walked down the grand staircase. The sun streamed through the large stained-glass entryway window, illuminating the polished hardwood floors that my father had loved so much.

I opened the front door. Standing on the porch was Martin, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies and a thick manila envelope containing the final, sealed decree of my completely uncontested divorce and sole custody order.

"Good morning, Madame CEO," Martin said with a warm, respectful smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I come bearing good news. Everything is finalized. You are officially, completely free."

I looked out past the wrought-iron gates, watching the morning traffic flow smoothly down the peaceful suburban street. The air smelled clean, crisp, and full of infinite promise. I looked down at Maisie, who let out a happy little gurgle and reached out her tiny hand to touch the white lilies.

"Thank you, Martin," I said, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face. "We are just getting started."
