Chapter 26 - The New HorizonThe winter snow melted slowly into the crisp, vibrant awakening of early spring in Boston. As Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Rhodes Capital, my days were filled with high-level strategic planning, international regulatory conferences, and mentoring the next generation of compliance attorneys who walked through our doors.

One sunny Thursday afternoon in April, I received an official invitation from the Harvard Law School Alumni Association, asking me to deliver the keynote address at their annual spring symposium on corporate ethics and forensic compliance.
Standing in front of a packed auditorium of eager law students, professors, and industry leaders, I looked out across the sea of expectant faces. The podium was quiet, the microphone steady before me.
"When I graduated from law school," my voice echoed clearly through the auditorium speakers, "I believed that the law was a neutral instrument—a set of rules designed to maintain order in the corporate world. But life teaches us that rules are only as strong as the integrity of the individuals who enforce them."
I paused, letting my gaze sweep across the room, remembering the lonely nights in the studio apartment, the locked doors in Weston, and the moment I stood in the grand ballroom of the Grand Harrington Hotel watching Marcus Mercer realize who I truly had become.
"You will encounter individuals who believe that ambition excuses deceit, that power grants immunity, and that control is achieved by silencing others," I continued, my voice growing stronger, steady, and resonant. "They will tell you to look away, to compromise your ethics, and to accept the status quo. I am here to tell you today: never compromise your integrity. Look beneath the surface. Follow the numbers. Because when the world tries to build empires out of deception, your mind and your unyielding commitment to the truth will always be the ultimate foundation."
When I finished speaking, silence hung in the air for one breathless second—before the entire auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing applause. Dozens of students stood clapping, their eyes shining with inspiration.

As I stepped down from the stage, Julian and Emma were waiting in the wings. Emma ran forward, throwing her arms around my waist, while Julian handed me a single, brilliant red rose with a proud, admiring smile.
"That was magnificent," Julian whispered, kissing my forehead. "You didn't just give a speech, Evelyn. You changed their lives."
