Chapter 29 - The Promise of TomorrowAugust arrived with golden sunshine and warm weekend getaways to our favorite coastal retreat in Newport, Rhode Island. The historic estate stood proudly against the crashing Atlantic surf, its stone pathways bathed in the golden, honeyed light of a late summer sunset.

We walked along the edge of the cliffside lawn, Emma running ahead to chase a flock of seagulls that lifted into the air with a flurry of white wings, their joyful cries echoing over the sound of the rolling waves.
Julian took my hand, his fingers intertwining naturally with mine as we watched her run. The ocean breeze whipped our hair around us, carrying the clean, salty scent of the sea.
"Penny for your thoughts, COO," Julian murmured, resting his chin gently against my hair.
I leaned into his embrace, closing my eyes for a brief moment to just breathe in the profound peace of the moment. "I was just thinking about how grateful I am for every single door that was closed in my face six years ago."
Julian tightened his grip around my waist, smiling warmly. "Why's that?"

" Because if those doors hadn't been locked," I whispered, opening my eyes to look up into his devoted gaze, "I never would have found the strength to build the door that opened up to this exact sunrise."
In the distance, Emma turned back toward us, waving frantically with both hands and shouting something about finding another heart-shaped sea-stone in the tide pools. We laughed together, waving back as we walked side by side across the golden grass to meet her.
