Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm in the Boardroom

Wednesday morning arrived with a biting New England chill that matched the atmosphere inside the fourteenth-floor glass boardroom at Rhodes Capital. Marcus sat at the far end of the long conference table, flanked by his jittery chief financial officer and a high-priced corporate defense attorney he had panic-hired the night before. His suit, usually immaculate, looked slightly rumpled around the collar, and the nervous twitch in his left eye betrayed the sleepless nights he had clearly endured since the wedding reception.

When Julian and I walked into the room, the temperature dropped another ten degrees. Julian took his seat at the head of the table, while I slid into the chair directly opposite Marcus, opening a sleek leather binder containing the certified audit documents.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Julian began, his voice devoid of any warmth. "We’re here to review the final compliance findings regarding the proposed acquisition of Mercer Logistics. Evelyn?"

I opened the folder, sliding a printed ledger across the polished walnut table toward Marcus’s attorney.

"Over the past forty-eight hours, our compliance division conducted a deep-dive forensic audit of Mercer Logistics' operational expenditures," I began, my tone clinical and detached. "We identified over two million dollars in unallocated funds diverted through offshore shell companies between two thousand twenty-one and the present."

Marcus slammed his hand down onto the table, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "This is absurd! It's a witch hunt! These numbers are fabricated!"

"Sit down, Marcus," his attorney hissed, frantically pulling on his sleeve.

I didn't blink. I simply turned the page to reveal signed banking authorizations bearing Marcus’s personal signature and IP address.

"Fabricated by your own digital signature, Marcus?" I asked calmly, looking him dead in the eye. "Every transaction was routed through a Cayman Islands account registered under an alias you used before our marriage. Furthermore, these funds were used to purchase personal luxury assets, including residential property in Weston currently inhabited by Chloe Vance."

The boardroom fell into a dead silence so profound you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents.

Marcus slowly sank back into his chair, his bravado entirely evaporated. The smirk he had worn at the wedding—the smug, cruel expression that had once signaled my total defeat—was replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated terror. He looked at me not as an ex-wife he had discarded, but as an executioner holding the blade above his neck.

"Why are you doing this, Evelyn?" he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "We can... we can work something out. An NDA, a private settlement..."

"This isn't personal, Marcus," I replied, closing the binder with a soft click. "This is just good business. And in business, fraud has consequences."
