Chapter 2 - The Video That Changed Everything

I didn't open the video right there on the porch with Mrs. Gable pretending not to watch from across the street and Eric sweating through his bathrobe. Instead, I turned on my heel, walked straight back inside the front door, and locked it behind me, leaving Eric standing outside alone with his lingerie-covered sedan.

I walked into the kitchen, placed my coffee mug down on the marble island, and dropped my phone onto the surface. The screen was still lit, displaying the thumbnail of the video file.

Eric scrambled through the front door a moment later, slamming it shut behind him. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.

"Danielle, please, don't look at anything! Don't listen to whatever spam or troll sent you something!" Eric pleaded, rushing toward the island and trying to snatch my phone.

I slapped his hand away with a sharp, stinging motion. The crack echoed in the quiet kitchen. Eric flinched, clutching his wrist, his eyes wide with shock. In eight years of marriage, I had never raised a hand against him. I had always been the supportive, patient, forgiving partner who absorbed his stress and managed his household while he chased his career.

"Don't you dare touch my phone, Eric," I said, my voice dropping into a register so cold and steady that it startled even me.

I picked up the device, tapped the play icon, and turned the screen toward him.

The video opened with crystal-clear high-definition footage filmed inside the penthouse suite of the Grand Luxe Hotel downtown—a luxury building where Eric claimed he only stayed when working late on regional zoning blueprints.

The timestamp in the corner read two nights ago at 11:45 PM.

The camera panned across the spacious living room, capturing designer clothes strewn across the floor. Then, the camera zoomed in on the plush king-sized bed. There was Eric, laughing and embracing a young woman with long dark hair—Chloe Vance, one of the junior interior designers assigned to his division.

As the video played on, audio filled our quiet kitchen. I heard Eric's voice, clear as day, boasting to Chloe: "Don't worry about Danielle. She’s completely predictable. She trusts me blindly. In six months, once I secure the corporate restructuring funds, I’ll divorce her, take the primary assets, and we’ll move into the lake house."

Then came Chloe’s giggling response: "And what about all her designer clothes and personal things left in the closet?"

And Eric’s sickening laugh: "We’ll throw them out with the trash, just like her."

The video cut to black.

The kitchen fell into a suffocating, absolute silence. Eric stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, every shred of his fabricated defense completely evaporated.

"Well, Eric," I whispered, stepping slowly toward him while keeping my eyes locked onto his trembling pupils. "It looks like your engineering department prank theory needs a bit of revision."
