Chapter 3 - The Financial Trap Spring

Eric collapsed against the kitchen counter, his knees buckling slightly under the weight of his own exposed cowardice. "Danielle... let me explain. It was a mistake. A moment of weakness! Chloe meant nothing to me, she was just—just a distraction—"

"Save it," I interrupted sharply, walking past him toward the hallway closet where I kept my locked metal filing cabinet.

I spun the dial combination, opened the heavy metal door, and pulled out a thick manila folder labeled Personal & Corporate Assets.

Eric watched me, his face turning an alarming shade of gray. "What... what are you doing with those?"

"You always told everyone that you built Vance Architecture from the ground up," I said, opening the folder and flipping through notarized partnership agreements, bank routing statements, and trust deeds. "You loved playing the self-made visionary during your charity galas and corporate interviews."

"D-Danielle..."

"You conveniently forgot," I continued, looking up and locking eyes with him, "that when your startup went under five years ago, it was my family inheritance that bailed you out. Eighty percent of the startup capital came from my father's estate. And the deed to this house, the land your firm sits on, and the secondary accounts? They are all registered under my maiden name as primary lienholder."

Eric stumbled forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward the papers. "You... you can't touch my business accounts! The board will never—"

"The board already knows," I said calmly, pulling my phone back out and tapping a pre-saved contact.

I pressed speakerphone. The line rang twice before a crisp, authoritative voice answered.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance. This is Arthur Sterling, senior managing partner at Sterling & Associates Legal Group."

"Good morning, Arthur," I said clearly. "The evidence package has been reviewed and verified. Please execute Phase One of the marital asset freeze and corporate restructuring immediately."

"Consider it done, Danielle," Arthur replied smoothly. "All corporate credit lines tied to Eric Vance are locked. Personal checking, savings, and investment portfolios are frozen pending litigation. Federal auditors are arriving at his downtown office within the hour."

"Thank you, Arthur."

I hung up the phone.

Eric stood frozen in horror, his jaw slack. As if on cue, his own smartphone—resting on the kitchen island—began buzzing frantically. A second later, it rang with an incoming alert. Then another. Then a non-stop barrage of notification sounds.

He snatched his phone, tapped the screen, and let out a strangled gasp. Every single one of his banking apps was displaying a glaring red banner: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN.

"You... you ruined me," Eric whispered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "You locked me out of everything?"

"I didn't ruin you, Eric," I replied, sliding the manila folder back into the metal cabinet and locking it with a sharp click. "I simply stopped carrying you. Now, you have twenty minutes to pack your things into a garbage bag, walk out to your lingerie-covered car, and figure out how to explain to your little mistress that you're suddenly completely broke."
