Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

Two days later, the high-rise glass headquarters of Vance Architecture was buzzing with the kind of frantic, gossipy energy that only a massive corporate scandal could produce.
I stepped out of the private elevator on the forty-second floor at precisely 9:00 AM, dressed in a sharp, tailored obsidian-gray pantsuit, my hair styled in a sleek, authoritative twist. On my arm hung a leather briefcase containing the official restructuring documents that would permanently strip Eric of his title, his office, and his shares.
As I walked down the glass-paneled hallway toward the executive boardroom, junior associates and administrative assistants pressed themselves flat against the walls, whispering nervously. News of the sudden freeze on company credit lines and Eric’s abrupt suspension had swept through the building like wildfire.
When I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the boardroom, I found Eric sitting at the head of the long mahogany table.
He looked like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His suit was wrinkled, his tie was missing, and dark, bruised circles framed his bloodshot eyes. Standing nervously beside him was Chloe Vance—who had already been stripped of her junior designer badge but had snuck into the building anyway, looking desperate and disheveled.
"You can't do this!" Chloe shrieked the moment she saw me enter the room. "This is illegal! You're just a vindictive ex-wife throwing a temper tantrum!"
I didn't even look at her. I walked straight toward the head of the table, placing my briefcase down with a deliberate, echoing thud.
I turned my gaze slowly toward my soon-to-be ex-husband. "Eric, tell your little friend to step outside before I have building security escort her out in handcuffs for trespassing on private corporate property."
Eric looked up, his eyes bloodshot and pleading. "Danielle... please. Let's be reasonable. We can settle this privately. We don't need lawyers, we don't need a public spectacle—"
"A public spectacle?" I cut him off, letting out a cold, humorless laugh. "Eric, your car was draped in lace on our front lawn for the entire neighborhood to admire. The video of you plotting my demise in a luxury hotel suite has already been forwarded to every major board member and regional investor. The spectacle is already over. You lost."
The boardroom door swung open again.
Marcus Vance—no relation to Eric, but a brilliant venture capitalist and my newly appointed co-partner in the restructured firm—strode inside, followed by two corporate security guards and the senior legal team.
Marcus dropped a thick dossier onto the center of the table right in front of Eric.
"Good morning, Mr. Vance," Marcus said cheerfully, pulling out a leather chair and sitting down opposite him. "Or should I say, former CEO. According to the emergency shareholder audit completed last night, you systematically misappropriated over three hundred thousand dollars in corporate development funds to finance your personal lifestyle and extra-marital affairs with junior staff."
Chloe gasped, turning to Eric in sheer terror. "You said those funds were legitimate bonuses! You said the company was making millions!"
"Shut up, Chloe," Eric hissed, his face flushing bright crimson.
"Too late for that, Mr. Vance," Marcus continued smoothly. "The board has voted unanimously to terminate your contract for gross misconduct, embezzlement, and breach of fiduciary duty. Furthermore, all remaining stock options have been forfeited to the primary majority stakeholder."
Marcus nodded respectfully in my direction.
I looked down at Eric, who looked smaller, weaker, and more pathetic than I had ever thought possible. The man who had once stood over me with such casual arrogance was now completely hollowed out by his own endless deceit.

"Sign the resignation papers, Eric," I said quietly, sliding a single sheet of paper toward him along with a silver fountain pen. "Or you can spend your next few years explaining your financial crimes to a federal judge from inside a maximum-security holding cell. The choice is yours."
Eric stared at the pen as if it were a venomous snake. His hands trembled violently, but after one final, desperate glance around the silent boardroom, he picked up the pen and scrawled his signature across the bottom line.
