Chapter 2 - The Price of a Secret and the Midnight Offer

The silence that followed was suffocating. The four guards remained stationed at their posts, their eyes darting between me and the open briefcase of cash on the table, while Dominic slowly circled my chair like a panther inspecting a wounded deer.
"You look like a woman whose world just ended," Dominic observed, his deep voice breaking the quiet as he stopped behind my left shoulder. "And yet, you stumbled into a room where men are negotiating executions. Explain the coincidence, sweetheart. Why should I let you walk out of here breathing?"
I swallowed hard, my throat raw. "My... my fiancé cheated on me," I whispered, the admission tasting like ash on my tongue. "With my best friend. I walked in on them. I couldn't breathe. I just ran down the hallway, pushed the first door I saw, and hoped the ground would open up and swallow me."
A heavy pause settled over the room. One of the guards muttered something under his breath, sounding deeply skeptical, but Dominic remained completely still.
"A broken heart," Dominic murmured, stepping back around to face me. He crouched down slightly so our eyes were level. Up close, I could see tiny, fascinating amber flecks in his impossibly dark irises. "People kill, betray, and destroy nations over love and loyalty. And you ran into a mafia safe room because a man broke your heart?"
"It feels like dying," I snapped, a sudden flash of hysterical anger piercing through my terror. I didn't care anymore if he killed me. My life was already ruined. "So excuse me if I didn't stop to check the zoning permits and security clearance of the hallway before I tried to find three minutes of peace!"
To my utter shock, the corners of Dominic’s mouth twitched upward into a faint, ghost of a smile—the first sign of human emotion I had seen on his face.
"Spunk," he murmured quietly, standing back up. "Most people piss their pants when they realize whose room they've entered. You yell at me." He turned back toward the mahogany table and snapped the heavy leather briefcase shut, the sound echoing loudly in the quiet space.
He picked up his crystal glass, finished the remaining amber liquid in one smooth gulp, and looked at the scarred man. "Vince, run her phone. Make sure she isn't lying about the breakup. Check her contacts, her messages, everything. If there's even a whisper of a connection to the Rossis, dispose of her cleanly."
"Yes, Boss," Vince replied, grabbing my shattered phone from the table.
Panic flared up again, but Dominic raised a hand, silencing any protest before it left my lips. "If she's clean—which she clearly is—bring her car around and have one of my men drive her home. We don't slaughter innocent collateral damage just because they have terrible navigation skills."
"Home," I repeated bitterly, a fresh tear escaping down my cheek despite my best efforts. "I don't have a home anymore. I lived with him. All my things are there. And I have nowhere else to go tonight."
Dominic paused, his hand resting on the latch of the briefcase. He looked back over his shoulder, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he appraised me with a new, calculating intensity. A complex web of thoughts seemed to pass behind those impenetrable eyes—a silent calculation of risk, utility, and inexplicable intrigue.
"Vince," Dominic commanded, his tone shifting into something chillingly decisive. "Forget the car. Bring her file to my private study at the penthouse. We're leaving."
Before I could process what he meant, two of the guards stepped forward, gently but firmly lifting me to my feet.
"Wait—where are you taking me?" I protested, stumbling against the arm of the chair. "You can't just kidnap me!"

Dominic walked toward a private side exit hidden behind a dark wood paneling. He paused at the threshold, turning his head slightly to look at me over his broad shoulder.
"You wanted somewhere quiet to hide from your miserable life, sweetheart," Dominic said smoothly, his voice washing over me with hypnotic authority. "Consider this a hostile takeover. Welcome to your new sanctuary."
