Chapter 3 - The Penthouse Cage and the Dangerous Proposal

The drive to Dominic’s residence was a blur of rain-slicked city streets viewed from the tinted windows of a heavily armored black Mercedes SUV. Two identical vehicles flanked us in a precise tactical convoy, cutting through the midnight traffic like sharks through water. I sat huddled in the corner of the leather back seat, sandwiched between two silent, towering guards, while Dominic sat across from me, casually reading encrypted reports on a secure tablet.
He didn't speak to me the entire ride, and I was too emotionally exhausted and terrified to push my luck.
When the SUV finally slid into a subterranean parking garage beneath a towering glass skyscraper in the city's most exclusive financial district, a private elevator whisked us directly up to the top floor.
The penthouse was breathtaking—and utterly terrifying. It was a cavernous, minimalist masterpiece of floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, polished concrete floors, modern art, and absolute, dead silence. There were no family photos, no warm touches, just cold luxury and calculated power.
Dominic dismissed his guards with a subtle wave of his hand. They vanished down a separate corridor as silently as ghosts, leaving the two of us standing alone in the massive, dimly lit living room.
"Sit," Dominic said again, tossing his suit jacket onto the back of a sleek designer sofa. He walked over to a wet bar and poured two glasses of scotch, keeping one for himself and extending the other toward me.
I kept my hands firmly clenched at my sides. "I don't want a drink. I want to know what you're going to do with me. Am I a prisoner here? Am I going to wake up tied to a chair in the morning?"
Dominic sighed, a sound of genuine fatigue, and set both glasses down on the marble counter. He turned around, leaning his hips against the edge of the bar, and crossed his arms over his chest.
"If I wanted you dead, Harper," he said, using my first name for the first time with chilling casualness, "you would have been left in the alley behind the club. Vince checked your phone. Your fiancé, Caleb Vance, was indeed entertaining your best friend, Khloe, in a private booth while you were at home baking dinner for him. Your lease is in his name. Your bank accounts were joint, and he’s already frozen them online twenty minutes ago."
My jaw dropped. The sheer violation of it—the betrayal not just of his heart, but of my entire livelihood—made my knees buckle. I grabbed onto the back of a nearby chair to steady myself.
"How... how do you know all that?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
"My people are thorough," Dominic replied simply. "Which brings us to your current predicament. You are homeless, penniless, heartbroken, and currently stranded in the private penthouse of the most dangerous man in this city. And yet, you aren't crying anymore."
I touched my cheek; it was dry. The shock had frozen my tears, replacing them with a cold, hard knot of pure fury and survival instinct.
"What do you want from me, Dominic?" I demanded, lifting my chin to meet his terrifying gaze head-on. "If I'm not a threat, and I'm not a prisoner, what am I doing here? Trophies don't interest men like you. So spell it out."
A slow, appreciative smile finally touched his lips—a dangerous, predatory grin that made my breath hitch in my throat.
"You're an accountant, Harper. Mid-level financial auditor for a major corporate logistics firm," Dominic said, walking slowly toward me until he was standing just inches away. "And as it happens, my organization requires an internal auditor who can untangle a very complex, very illegal web of money laundering currently being operated by a rival syndicate—using your former fiancé's corporate network as a front."
I stared at him in absolute disbelief. "Caleb? Caleb is a mid-level marketing manager! He doesn't know anything about money laundering!"
"Caleb is an idiot who thinks he's a criminal mastermind," Dominic corrected smoothly, his dark eyes burning into mine. "He’s been skimming funds for your best friend's lavish lifestyle through shell companies tied directly to the Rossi family. They think they're invisible. But you and I... we are going to dismantle them brick by brick."
"And if I say no?" I asked defiantly.
Dominic leaned down, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper right beside my ear. "Then I will give you a suitcase full of cash, put you on a private jet, and send you anywhere in the world you want to go. But you will go back into the world knowing that Caleb and Khloe are living comfortably off the money they stole from you and your company, laughing behind your back."
He straightened up, watching me carefully. "Or... you stay here. You take the job. I give you unlimited resources, absolute protection, and the legal right to legally, financially, and publicly destroy everything Caleb holds dear."
The silence in the penthouse stretched for an eternity. Below us, the city lights twinkled like distant stars, indifferent to the wars fought in the shadows.
I thought of Caleb’s condescending smile. I thought of Khloe’s betrayal. I thought of the blood-stained napkin in the VIP room and the man standing before me, offering me an empire of vengeance on a silver platter.
Slowly, deliberately, the fear inside my chest transformed into something fierce, unbreakable, and dark.

I reached out, picked up the crystal glass of scotch from the bar, and took a long, burning sip that scorched my throat.
"When do we start?" I asked.
