Chapter 1 - The Slip of the Tongue

The silence in the master bedroom was thick enough to suffocate a lesser man. Vincent Rowe, a man whose word law and iron fists controlled half the shipping lanes and real estate portfolios in the Midwest, stood frozen inside his own bedroom. His hands, usually steady when signing death warrants or multi-million-dollar acquisition papers, gripped the edge of the mahogany dresser.

"Do you love her?" Claire asked again. Her voice was not raised. It did not tremble. It carried the chilling, flat resonance of winter ice over Lake Michigan.

Vincent swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Claire... it isn't what you think. Madison is—"

"Madison," Claire repeated, tasting the name on her tongue as if it were something foul. She stood up from the edge of the bed, smoothing down the front of her cashmere sweater. "Seven months of Madison. Seven months of late nights, emergency conferences, and phantom business trips. And tonight, right in the middle of our home, you forgot which woman was wearing the ring."

"It was an accident," Vincent said, taking a step toward her. His dark eyes were filled with a desperate urgency that Claire had never seen in him before. This was a man accustomed to total command, unaccustomed to facing the consequences of his own hubris. "My mind was drowning in work. You know how volatile the syndicate restructuring has been. It slipped out."

"It slipped out," Claire echoed, letting out a short, humorless breath. "Because you say it to her more than you say it to me. Because she occupies your thoughts when you're supposed to be building a life here, under this roof."

"Claire, listen to me," Vincent pleaded, closing the distance and reaching for her hand.

She didn't pull away, but her hand remained completely limp in his grasp—lifeless, cold, and entirely detached. That coldness frightened him more than a slap would have.

"I am listening, Vincent," she whispered, looking directly into his eyes. "For eight years, I stood by you. When your enemies sent threats to our front gate, I didn't flinch. When you came home with blood on your cuffs and nightmares you wouldn't name, I held you until dawn. I gave you my youth, my safety, and my absolute loyalty."

"And you have everything," Vincent stammered. "This house, my protection, my heart—"

"Your heart?" Claire tilted her head, a bittersweet smile touching the corners of her lips. "Vincent, you don't even have your own mind anymore. You gave seven months of your life to a corporate climber who wants your empire just as much as she wants your bed. But you made one fatal mistake."

"What mistake?"

"You forgot who built this empire with you." Claire gently slid her hand out of his grip, stepping back. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sleep in the guest suite. We have a very busy morning tomorrow."

"What happens tomorrow?" Vincent demanded, his mafia instincts flaring as a cold knot twisted in his stomach.

May you like

"You'll find out," Claire said softly, turning her back on him and walking toward the adjoining hallway without looking back.

Vincent stood alone in the dark bedroom, his chest heaving, listening to the grandfather clock tick away the seconds of a life that was about to fracture beyond repair.
