Chapter 5 - A New Kingdom

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the pristine white sands of Palm Beach, Florida.
The air was warm, smelling of salt water, hibiscus, and absolute freedom.
Claire Rowe—legally and permanently restored to her maiden name, Claire Montgomery—sat on the private balcony of a magnificent oceanfront penthouse, sipping iced green tea. Her dark blond hair caught the sunlight, framing a face free of stress, free of deceit, and free of shadows.
On the glass table beside her lay the final settlement documents.
Vincent Rowe had taken a plea deal three months prior, trading federal cooperation for a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Colorado. His syndicate had fractured within days of his arrest, devoured by rival factions and dismantled piece by piece by federal investigators.
And Madison?
Claire smiled faintly as she remembered the frantic, tearful phone call she had received from the former mistress two months ago—begging for financial help after Vincent’s accounts were frozen and her own name was dragged into the federal conspiracy indictments. Claire had simply hung up the phone and blocked the number.
Some people learned their lessons the hard way. Others built empires out of the wreckage.
"Everything alright, boss?"
Claire looked up as Marcus Vance, her new chief executive officer and long-time trusted legal advisor, stepped out onto the balcony holding a fresh tablet of corporate portfolios.
"Everything is perfect, Marcus," Claire said, leaning back in her lounge chair and adjusting her oversized designer sunglasses. "How is the acquisition of the Miami shipping terminals coming along?"
"Ahead of schedule," Marcus smiled, handing her the tablet. "The board approved the buyout this morning. Vanguard—excuse me, Montgomery Enterprises—is officially the largest maritime logistics firm on the Eastern Seaboard."
Claire took the tablet, scrolling through the glowing financial projections. Her name was at the very top of every document, clear, undisputed, and unassailable.
She had entered her marriage as a shadow behind a dangerous man, and she had left it as an absolute sovereign.

She took a slow sip of her iced tea, looked out over the endless blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, and smiled.
Let men call whatever name they wanted in the dark. She was the one who owned the dawn.
