Chapter 4 - The Fall of the King

By noon, the empire built on blood, silence, and intimidation had completely unraveled.

Vincent sat at his desk, staring blankly at the unsigned divorce papers. The house was deathly quiet. The grandfather clock continued its steady, merciless tick, counting down the hours of his freedom.

His phone—the secure encrypted line he used for syndicate business—vibrated violently on the desk.

He didn't want to answer it, but he knew he had no choice.

"Boss," came the frantic voice of Marco, his chief enforcer, shouting over the sound of sirens in the background. "Boss, we got a massive problem! The federal agents just raided the downtown logistics hub! They have warrants for every single offshore account, every holding company, and every shipping ledger! They knew everything, boss! Someone handed them the master decryption keys!"

"Who?" Vincent whispered, though he already knew the answer.

"I don't know! The feds say an anonymous whistleblower deposited the entire digital archive of Vanguard Global Enterprises directly to the DOJ this morning!" Marco panicked. "The boys are scattering. What do we do?"

"Burn it," Vincent said hollowly. "Burn it all."

He hung up the phone and let it slide from his fingers onto the floor.

He looked around the grand, lavish study. The leather-bound books, the expensive art, the limestone fireplace, the view of the gray lake outside. It had all been an illusion—a castle built on sand, sustained entirely by the loyalty of a woman he had taken for granted.

He had traded a queen for a pawn, and in doing so, he had lost the board entirely.

Slowly, his hands trembling with a defeat he had never experienced in his entire life, Vincent picked up a heavy gold-plated fountain pen—a gift Claire had given him on their fifth wedding anniversary.

He flipped to the signature page of the divorce petition.

Without reading another word, Vincent Rowe signed his name.
