Chapter 2 - The Midnight Audit

Downstairs in his private study, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and locked filing cabinets, Vincent poured himself a triple shot of bourbon. The amber liquid burned his throat, but it did nothing to numb the ice spreading through his veins.

His phone buzzed relentlessly on the mahogany desk.

Madison.

He picked it up, his thumb hovering over the screen, and finally answered.

"Vincent! Where are you?" Madison’s voice came through the speaker, tight, sharp, and laced with accusation. "You promised you’d leave her tonight. You said we were going to talk about the transition plan for the holding company."

"Not now, Madison," Vincent growled, rubbing his temples where a splitting migraine was beginning to form.

"Don't 'not now' me!" she snapped. "I've given you the best years of my career, managing your offshore accounts and cleaning up your corporate paper trail. If you can't even leave your suburban housewife, what are we even doing?"

"My wife," Vincent hissed, his voice dropping into that dark, dangerous register that usually made his lieutenants tremble, "is a thousand times the woman you will ever be. Do not call me again tonight."

He hung up, cutting off her shrill protests, and tossed the phone across the room where it smashed against a leather armchair.

For the first time in his ruthless career, Vincent realized the terrifying magnitude of his own stupidity. He had believed he was untouchable. He thought he could compartmentalize his life—keep the dangerous, powerful mistress for passion and ambition, and keep the loyal, loving wife for comfort and status. He never imagined that Claire would simply... check out.

Panic, cold and sharp, clawed at his chest. He unlocked his desk drawer and pulled out a heavy ledger—the physical master record of every asset, corporation, shell company, and hidden bank account he owned.

Vincent flipped it open.

His eyes scanned the pages, tracking the corporate structures, the real estate deeds, and the primary holding entities.

Everything was registered correctly. The shipping firms were under his primary holding corporation. The Lake Michigan estate was under a family trust.

Except...

Vincent’s finger stopped on a specific entry near the bottom of page forty-two.

The Holding Corporation: Vanguard Global Enterprises.

The entity that owned ninety percent of his liquid capital, his legitimate real estate portfolios, and his stock in the international shipping networks.

He stared at the names listed as the primary beneficial owners and voting shareholders.

For the past five years, since the federal investigations had started closing in, Vincent had restructured his entire empire to protect it from asset forfeiture. He needed a clean proxy—someone entirely above suspicion, someone with an impeccable legal record, someone whom federal investigators would never dream of connecting to the syndicate.

He had put seventy percent of Vanguard Global Enterprises in Claire’s name.

At the time, it had been a calculated legal shield. He trusted her implicitly. He thought she was a naive, devoted housewife who wouldn't know a voting share from a grocery list.

Vincent’s breath hitched. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

He grabbed his laptop, slammed the password in, and pulled up the digital corporate registry for Vanguard Global Enterprises.

The screen flickered. The database loaded.

Vincent typed in the master corporate credentials, expecting to see his administrative override lock in place.

Instead, a stark red error message flashed across the monitor:

ACCESS DENIED. ADMINISTRATIVE RIGHTS REVOKED BY PRIMARY CONTROLLING SHAREHOLDER.

Vincent stared at the screen in absolute horror.

The primary shareholder was no longer him. Twenty minutes ago—at precisely 12:14 AM—an emergency digital amendment had been filed, executed with an electronic cryptographic signature that only one person possessed.

May you like

Claire.

She hadn't just walked away to a guest suite. In the span of twenty minutes, his quiet, elegant, loyal wife had legally stripped him of his entire fortune, locking him out of the very empire he had killed and bled to build.
