Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE WITH AN OPEN EYE

Assistant United States Attorney Naomi Reyes arrived at the Duca estate before sunrise in an unmarked vehicle accompanied by two federal agents and a trauma physician. She was forty-one, composed, and unimpressed by the armed men at the gate. Her first words to Luca were not a greeting.
“If this is an attempt to feed me evidence against Russo while hiding your own conduct, I leave now.”
“It isn’t.”
“What do you want in exchange?”
“Medical protection for Isabella and a lawful chain of custody for whatever is inside that envelope.”
Naomi studied him as if waiting for the concealed condition. “No immunity?”
“I didn’t ask for it.”
Isabella gave her statement with Dr. Hail present. She described the fraudulent documents, Damian’s assault, her father’s conversation, and the prepared runaway story. Her wet wedding dress, missing heel, wrist injury, and blood found inside the chapel were logged as evidence. Naomi photographed the envelope’s contents before transferring them into tamper-evident bags.
The microSD card was encrypted, but the handwritten strip and key were enough to support an emergency warrant application when combined with Isabella’s statement and Damian’s threatening message. Naomi also arranged a secure hospital transfer. Before they could move her, however, a television in the adjoining room carried Richard Carter’s live press conference.
Isabella’s father stood beside Damian beneath the Regency Hotel’s chandeliers. Richard looked exhausted, but Damian was immaculate in a black suit and silver tie. He told reporters that Isabella had suffered “an emotional episode” and vanished before the ceremony. Richard begged anyone with information to bring his confused daughter home.
Then Damian looked directly into the cameras. “If Luca Duca is holding Isabella, he should understand that exploiting a vulnerable woman will have consequences.”
Isabella watched her father nod beside the man who had left her to freeze. “He knows,” she said. “Dad knows exactly what happened.”
Naomi switched off the television. “We correct the record after we secure the warrant.”
“No.” Isabella pushed away the blanket. “They are using my silence as proof that I’m unstable.”
“If you appear publicly now, Damian will know what evidence survived.”
“He already knows about the envelope.”
“He doesn’t know whether we can use it.”
Isabella considered the difference. She wanted to tear apart Damian’s lie immediately, but anger was not the same as strategy. “Record me,” she said. “Time-stamp it and keep it sealed. If something happens to me, release it.”
Naomi agreed. Isabella faced a federal camera and stated her name, the date, and what Damian had done. She held up her bruised wrist and made one fact unmistakable: she had not run from her wedding. She had escaped an attempted murder.
While the statement was secured, Marco traced the camera breach. The access came through Vittorio Duca’s permanent credential, but the logs had been scrubbed with expertise Vittorio did not possess. Luca’s uncle had helped build the family’s network and had spent three years urging Luca to abandon his investigation into Matteo’s death. That made him suspicious, not guilty.
Luca called him. Vittorio answered on the second ring and sounded half asleep. “You found trouble on the chapel road?”
Luca looked at Marco. No one had publicly mentioned the chapel road.
“What makes you think that?” Luca asked.
A pause followed. “The storm. That route always brings trouble.”
“I’ll call you later.”
Luca ended the call without exposing what Vittorio had revealed. Marco immediately revoked every remote credential and ordered the estate searched room by room.
The power failed seven minutes later.
Emergency lights flashed red along the east-wing corridor. A man in a Duca security jacket forced open Isabella’s bedroom door and rushed toward the bed with a syringe in his hand. Isabella recognized him as one of the men who had stood beside Damian at the chapel.
She rolled from the mattress before he reached her. Pain tore through her feet when she landed, but she grabbed the metal water carafe from the bedside table and struck his wrist. The syringe skidded beneath a chair. Dr. Hail stepped between them and took a blow to the shoulder.
The attacker seized Isabella’s nightgown. She drove her thumb into the healing cut near his eye and pulled the fire alarm. A mechanical bell erupted through the estate, independent of the disabled electricity.
Marco reached the room first. He drove the attacker into the wall and pinned him until federal agents arrived. Luca entered seconds later with a gun leveled at the man’s head.
“His name is Caleb Ward,” Isabella said, struggling to breathe. “He held the chapel door while Damian came after me.”
Luca’s finger tightened against the trigger.
“If you kill him,” she said, “Damian gets his silence.”
Luca stared at Caleb, then lowered the weapon. “Search him.”
Inside Caleb’s coat, Marco found a burner phone displaying Isabella’s photograph and three words:

RECOVER KEY 317.
The black envelope had not merely frightened Damian. Whatever waited inside Box 317 could destroy him.
