Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF A DAUGHTER

Federal agents reached the South Yard to find Richard’s office abandoned, his phone broken beneath a loading dock, and blood on the corner of his desk. Security footage had been erased. Damian had removed him less than four minutes after the call.
Naomi considered Richard a co-conspirator, not merely a hostage. Isabella agreed. Her father’s fear did not erase the choice he had made when Damian threatened his business. Eight hundred employees had mattered to Richard only when their jobs could be used to manipulate his daughter. He had stolen from those same workers for years.
“He still has to come out alive,” Isabella said. “Not because he deserves forgiveness. Because he has to answer questions in a courtroom.”
Luca understood the distinction. Mercy was not absolution, and rescue did not require reconciliation.
Vittorio arrived at the estate that afternoon without being summoned. He walked into Luca’s study complaining about the federal vehicles at the gate, then stopped when he saw a photocopy of the Harbor 14 ledger entry on the desk.
“You used my credential,” Luca said.
Vittorio’s eyes remained on the initials. “Those records are Damian’s invention.”
“The security image came through the access I gave you.”
“Then Russo stole it.”
“Why did you know I was on the chapel road?”
For years, Vittorio had been the nearest thing Luca had to a father. He taught Luca to negotiate, to hide pain, and to treat hesitation as an invitation for someone else to act first. When Matteo died, Vittorio stood beside the grave and promised the family would discover who had locked the warehouse exit.
Now his gaze failed to meet Luca’s.
“It was supposed to be empty,” Vittorio said.
Marco quietly activated the recorder on his phone.
Vittorio claimed Damian wanted Harbor 14 destroyed for an insurance settlement and offered two million dollars for temporary access. Matteo changed his inspection schedule without telling anyone. By the time Vittorio learned workers were inside, the fire had already begun. He spent the next three years feeding Luca false leads because exposing Damian would also expose him.
“You watched me bury my brother,” Luca said.
“I was protecting what remained of the family.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Vittorio’s voice rose. “Everything you have exists because men like me made decisions you were too young to understand.”
Luca moved around the desk. Vittorio flinched, expecting violence. Luca felt the weight of his gun and the old certainty that betrayal could be answered only one way.
Then he remembered Isabella’s hand stopping him from shooting Caleb.
He opened the study door. Naomi and two agents waited in the corridor.
Vittorio’s face collapsed. “You brought the government into our house?”
“No,” Luca said. “You brought Damian into it.”
The agents arrested Vittorio for conspiracy, obstruction, and his role in the Harbor 14 fire. As they led him away, Luca ordered Marco to notify every Duca captain that there would be no retaliation. Any man who attacked a Russo property would be turned over with the others.
Several captains threatened to leave. Two did. Luca let them go under surveillance. By evening, he had transferred his financial archives to Naomi’s forensic team and signed a formal cooperation proffer that offered no guarantee about his sentence.
Damian responded publicly. He released the stolen bedroom image and claimed it proved Luca had abducted and drugged Isabella. He used her cream nightgown, closed eyes, and the armed estate guards to reshape the rescue into captivity. News outlets ran the photograph beside old images of Luca entering federal court.
Isabella watched the lie spread and made her third decisive choice.
“Release my statement,” she told Naomi.
“The warrants are still active.”
“He already knows we have the key. Silence protects him now, not the investigation.”
Naomi reviewed the risks, then authorized a limited release. Isabella’s recorded statement appeared across Chicago within the hour. She named Damian, described the chapel, displayed her documented wrist injury, and confirmed she had asked Luca to protect her. She did not mention Box 317 or the recordings.
The public story changed immediately. Reporters began comparing the timestamp of Damian’s runaway announcement with the estimated time Isabella had been abandoned. The lie had been issued before anyone supposedly knew she was missing.
Carter Freight’s board scheduled an emergency meeting for the following morning. Damian intended to use Isabella’s proxy to take control before a court could freeze it. If he succeeded, he could destroy records, move money, and scatter employees who knew how the accounts worked.
“I’m attending,” Isabella said.
Luca looked at the medical monitor beside her bed. “You nearly died yesterday.”
“And yesterday everyone made decisions about my company, my body, and my life while I was expected to remain quiet. That part is over.”
Naomi agreed to place the meeting under surveillance. Isabella would challenge the proxy publicly while agents monitored Damian’s response. Luca would remain outside because his presence could support Damian’s coercion claim.
Before Isabella left the estate, Luca returned the cleaned black envelope in an evidence sleeve. “The original belongs to the case,” he said. “This is a forensic duplicate.”
She studied the raven seal. “Damian believed this controlled everyone in the room.”

“He was wrong.”
“Not yet,” Isabella said. “But he’s about to be.”
