Chapter 4 - BOX 317

By nine that morning, Naomi had secured sealed warrants for Caleb’s phone, the relevant Carter Freight accounts, and Box 317 at Lakefront Mercantile Bank. Isabella was transferred under federal protection to a secure medical floor, where her core temperature stabilized and her cardiac tests showed no permanent damage. Dr. Hail’s shoulder was badly bruised but not broken.

Luca expected to be excluded from the bank search. Instead, Naomi asked him to identify references connected to Matteo’s death while warning that anything he admitted could be used against him.

“That warning is beginning to sound personal,” Luca said.

“It becomes personal when men believe exposing someone else’s crimes should erase their own.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“Then today may be productive.”

Federal agents opened Box 317 inside the bank’s evidence room. The container held a black leather ledger, two encrypted drives, the original documents Isabella had signed, and a miniature digital recorder wrapped inside an accountant’s cloth bag. Forensic technicians photographed every layer before touching it.

The first drive contained Carter Freight’s real accounts. Richard had diverted nearly twenty-six million dollars from employee pensions and maintenance funds to conceal years of losses. Damian covered the shortfall through shell companies, then used the debt to force Richard into surrendering control. Isabella’s supposed marital agreement was an irrevocable voting proxy transferring her thirty-eight percent interest to a Russo-controlled trust the moment she signed.

Damian did not need the wedding after that. He needed Isabella unable to challenge the fraud.

The leather ledger went further. It recorded bribes, arson payments, judges, inspectors, and routes used to move contraband through legitimate freight companies. Naomi turned to Luca when she reached the Harbor 14 entries. Beside Matteo’s initials appeared a payment to V. Duca for security access.

Vittorio.

Luca’s uncle had given Damian the route and alarm codes on the night Matteo died.

A technician activated the recorder. The dead accountant identified himself as Peter Alden, Damian’s financial controller. His voice shook as he explained that he had copied the records after learning the Harbor 14 fire would occur while workers were still inside.

Then Damian’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Duca’s brother inspects the night shift on Thursdays. Lock the east exit before you light it. If anyone else stays late, that’s their mistake.”

Luca did not move. Matteo had died trying to reopen the locked exit. Six employees died beside him.

The next recording captured Richard and Damian discussing Isabella.

Richard said, “She’ll sign if she thinks it saves the workers.”

Damian replied, “Once the proxy clears, cancel the ceremony and move her. By morning, she ran away. By next week, no one will still be searching the snow.”

Isabella closed her eyes. Hearing her father bargain away her safety hurt differently from suspecting it. Suspicion left room for denial. A recording did not.

Naomi stopped the device. “This can dismantle Russo’s organization, but the defense will attack Alden’s chain of custody and claim the recordings were altered. We need corroboration, the original devices, witnesses, and financial authentication.”

“You have Caleb,” Luca said.

“We have a hired man who will lie until lying becomes more dangerous than cooperating.”

Luca looked at Matteo’s name. A private war would satisfy the oldest part of him, but it would also scatter the evidence beneath bodies, fear, and competing stories. Damian expected retaliation because retaliation was the language both families had always used.

“What would you need from me?” Luca asked.

Naomi’s expression sharpened. “Complete records. Accounts, payments, personnel, and every legitimate company used to shelter illegal revenue. You do not get to choose which crimes count.”

“Protection for Isabella and the Carter employees.”

“Victim protection is already available. Your cooperation does not purchase it.”

“No immunity for me?”

“No.”

Luca nodded once. “Then prepare the agreement.”

Isabella stared at him. “You’re surrendering your organization.”

“I’m preventing Damian from turning this into a war.”

“And afterward?”

“Afterward, I answer for what I built.”

Before Naomi could respond, Isabella’s phone rang from an unlisted number. Federal technicians connected the trace and allowed her to answer.

Richard’s voice sounded smaller than it had at the press conference. “Bella, you have to return what you took.”

“You told the city I ran away.”

“Damian was angry. I was trying to keep him calm.”

“You knew he left me outside.”

“I thought he meant to frighten you.”

Isabella looked through the glass at Naomi. “How did you know about the envelope?”

Richard inhaled sharply.

“You should have left it where Damian put it,” he whispered.

The line gave Naomi the corroboration she needed. It also gave Isabella something more painful: proof that her father knew why Damian had hunted her through the chapel.

“Where are you?” she asked.

A man’s voice ordered Richard to end the call. The connection died, but technicians traced it to Carter Freight’s South Yard.

Damian had begun eliminating the people who could confirm the ledger. Richard Carter had finally become expendable too.
