Chapter 6 - THE RUNAWAY BRIDE SPEAKS

The Carter Freight board gathered inside the Regency Hotel because federal agents had sealed the company’s headquarters. Damian sat at the head of the conference table as if the chair already belonged to him. Lawyers occupied one side of the room, board members the other, and reporters waited behind glass doors for the expected announcement.

At ten precisely, Damian’s attorney presented Isabella’s proxy and moved to appoint Damian executive chairman.

The conference-room doors opened before the vote began.

Isabella entered wearing a navy suit, flat shoes, and no attempt to hide the bruising around her wrist. Naomi walked behind her with two federal agents. Conversation died as Isabella took the empty chair opposite Damian.

For one unguarded second, he looked at her the way he had outside the chapel—not with love or relief, but with anger that something he discarded had returned.

“My client is medically vulnerable,” Damian’s attorney said. “We believe she is acting under coercion.”

Isabella placed the fraudulent agreement on the table. “Your client is Damian. I am the woman he tried to kill.”

The board’s independent counsel suspended the vote while a forensic examiner explained that entire pages had been substituted after Isabella signed. The notary’s digital log placed him at Damian’s office rather than St. Augustine’s, and the trust receiving Isabella’s shares had been created six months before Damian proposed.

Damian leaned back. “Documents can be manufactured. Luca Duca has built an industry from intimidation.”

“I took the envelope from you before Luca ever saw me,” Isabella said.

Damian’s control slipped. “That envelope was stolen from my private files.”

The room became utterly still.

Neither Isabella nor the examiner had identified where the envelope originated. Damian had defended his ownership before anyone accused him of possessing it.

Naomi stepped forward. “Would you like to repeat that for the record?”

Damian realized his mistake and stood. “This meeting is over.”

“It isn’t,” Isabella said. “My mother gave me those shares so no man could sell the company without my consent. My father tried. You tried. Neither of you owns my vote.”

The board froze all transfers pending federal review and appointed an independent receiver. Damian left through a service corridor before agents had grounds to detain him on the sealed conspiracy case. Naomi’s team followed discreetly, hoping he would lead them to Richard or to the original records not found in Box 317.

Isabella faced the reporters. She did not describe herself as Luca’s rescued bride or Damian’s victim. She identified herself as a Carter Freight shareholder and cooperating witness. She confirmed that employee pension money had been stolen and promised to support a receivership that protected workers before family wealth.

Outside the hotel, Luca watched the broadcast from an unmarked federal vehicle. Marco sat beside him, no longer wearing the earpiece that had connected him to the Duca organization for sixteen years.

“You’re letting the whole structure fall,” Marco said.

“It was already rotten.”

“Some of the men will come after you.”

“Then Reyes will have more defendants.”

Marco almost smiled. “Prison has made you cheerful, and you haven’t even arrived.”

Luca’s phone rang. Damian’s name appeared on the screen.

Naomi signaled for the trace to begin before Luca answered.

Damian’s voice was calm again. “You always wanted the truth about Matteo. Bring me the ledger, and I’ll give you the man who sold him.”

“Vittorio is already in custody.”

A pause betrayed Damian’s surprise.

Then Richard cried out in the background.

Damian recovered quickly. “Midnight. St. Augustine’s Chapel. You and Isabella bring every copy from Box 317. If I see federal vehicles, her father dies.”

Isabella heard the recording when she returned from the board meeting. Naomi expected her to reject the demand. Richard was a conspirator, and Damian’s message provided enough evidence to continue searching without risking her life.

Instead, Isabella studied the chapel map. “Damian believes my father is the only reason I’ll come.”

“Isn’t he?” Luca asked.

“No. Damian said he would give you the man who sold Matteo even though he knows Vittorio has been arrested. That means someone else is connected to the fire—or Damian needs us to believe there is. Either way, he plans to destroy the remaining evidence tonight.”

Naomi warned that the storm would interfere with aerial surveillance and radio signals. Isabella did not change her mind.

“You found me there,” she told Luca. “But I decide how I return.”
