Chapter 1 - The Midnight Archive

The heavy mahogany doors of the Blackwood Library had been locked to the public for nearly an hour, but the silence inside was far from peaceful. It felt watchful, thick with a hidden tension that made the dust motes dancing in the dim emergency light look like falling ash.

Camila Hayes stood behind the polished circulation desk, her fingers resting lightly on the cold wood. Six feet away stood Christian Baron. The most feared man in Manhattan didn't look like a criminal; he looked like a storm dressed in an expensive charcoal suit that seemed completely untouched by the pouring rain outside. Two massive guards flanked him, their stillness so absolute they made the marble lions near the entrance look restless by comparison.

Camila knew Christian’s name because everyone in the city knew it. City officials attended his charity dinners, business owners lowered their voices when he walked past, and newspapers wrote in hushed tones about his sprawling influence without ever tracing its origins. Fifteen minutes before closing, he had walked into her library and demanded access to a sealed archive that hadn’t been opened in eighteen years.

Camila had refused.

He hadn’t threatened her. Somehow, that made him infinitely more dangerous.

"I need the book stored under the Hayes collection, box 17," Christian had said, placing one gloved hand on the counter.

Hearing her own last name had sent a sharp jolt of electricity beneath her ribs, but she kept her expression locked in professional neutrality. Librarians learned early that showing surprise invited questions she didn't want to answer.

"That collection is restricted," she had replied calmly.

"Then unrestrict it."

"That isn't how archives work."

One of his guards shifted slightly, clearly expecting Christian to snap. Instead, the mafia boss merely studied her with dark, unreadable eyes. "Do you always make powerful people wait?"

"Only the ones without appointments."

Now, standing in the dim light after the fire alarm had abruptly ceased, the atmosphere shifted from tense to lethal. The mysterious man in the navy raincoat—Daniel Mercer, head of security and trusted face of the library for nine years—had turned out to be a traitor. Through the narrow metal ventilation grate, Camila watched him standing at the central archive worktable. Beneath a harsh green desk lamp lay an open, leather-bound book and a faded photograph of a young woman with Camila's exact eyes.

Her mother.

Daniel pressed a small handheld radio to his mouth, his face twisted in a cold, triumphant smile.

"They're coming," Daniel murmured into the transmitter, his voice echoing faintly through the ventilation shaft. "The librarian and her dangerous little friend. Let them walk right into the trap."

Beside Camila inside the cramped service tunnel, Christian Baron didn't hesitate. Without making a sound, he unholstered a sleek, suppressed firearm from beneath his jacket, his movements fluid and practiced. He glanced at Camila, silently asking a question with his eyes.

Are you ready?

Camila nodded once. She had spent ten years wondering why her mother died in a fiery car crash, why their house had been ransacked the following night, and why every official record of her family had vanished. If Daniel Mercer had the answers, she was going to get them—even if it meant tearing the entire library down to its foundation.
