Chapter 3 - The Underground Collapse

The floor beneath their feet shuddered violently.

A deep, subterranean rumble echoed through the historic stone walls of the library as explosive charges—rigged by Daniel’s associates to destroy the archive and erase decades of evidence—detonated in the outer utility corridors. Overhead, dust rained down in thick, choking clouds, and the emergency lights flickered wildly before dying completely, plunging the underground room into pitch blackness.

"Get down!" Christian shouted, grabbing Camila by the waist and pulling her hard behind a massive steel shelving unit just as a heavy chunk of masonry crashed down from the ceiling, smashing the desk where Daniel had been standing.

Shouts and muffled curses echoed through the dust-filled air.

Camila coughed, waving her hand in front of her face. The beam of Christian's tactical flashlight cut through the gray haze, illuminating the chaos. The primary exit corridor was blocked by tons of fallen stone and twisted rebar. They were trapped beneath the city streets.

Across the room, through the settling dust, Daniel Mercer scrambled over a pile of rubble, clutching the leather-bound ledger in his arms. Coughing heavily, he lunged toward the old service tunnel—the very same escape route Camila and Christian had just used.

"He's taking the ledger!" Camila yelled, trying to push past Christian.

Christian caught her arm, his grip firm and unyielding. "Stay behind me. That tunnel is unstable."

"If he gets to the surface with those records, everything my parents died for is gone!" she insisted, her eyes flashing with a fierce, desperate courage that left Christian momentarily stunned.

Without waiting for his permission, Camila ducked beneath his arm and sprinted into the low, cramped service passage, tracking the sound of Daniel’s frantic footsteps scraping against the concrete pipe.

Christian cursed under his breath, drawing his sidearm and following her into the narrow darkness. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, ozone, and ancient dust. The tunnel walls vibrated with every aftershock, threatening to cave in at any second.

Up ahead, Daniel stumbled, dropping his flashlight. The beam rolled across the floor, illuminating the cramped wet walls. He turned around, gasping for air, clutching the heavy book to his chest like a shield.

"Stay back, Camila!" Daniel screamed, pulling a small, heavy wrench from his coat pocket. "I swear to God, I'll throw this book into the municipal runoff canal! It'll dissolve in seconds! You'll never know the truth!"

Camila stopped ten feet away, her chest heaving. She raised her hands slowly, keeping her voice eerily calm—the exact tone she used when dealing with unruly patrons who refused to follow the rules.

"You can destroy the book, Daniel," Camila said softly, taking one slow, calculated step forward. "You can burn it, drown it, or tear it to shreds. But you memorized page 317, didn't you? That's why you didn't leave it behind. That's why you're running."

Daniel’s eyes widened slightly, betraying his panic.

It was all the distraction Christian needed. Moving with terrifying speed and absolute silence, Christian slid forward along the curved wall of the concrete pipe, closing the distance in less than a second. Before Daniel could react, Christian struck with the heavy butt of his firearm, catching the traitor squarely across the temple.

Daniel collapsed instantly, unconscious, the leather-bound ledger slipping from his limp fingers and sliding across the concrete floor right to Camila’s feet.
