Chapter 5 - A New Chapter

Three weeks later, the Blackwood Library reopened its doors to the public.

The front steps were polished, the broken windows repaired, and the local newspapers were filled with glowing articles praising the prompt actions of the heroic head librarian and local authorities in uncovering a massive corporate embezzlement scandal.

Daniel Mercer and his co-conspirators were already facing federal trial, their syndicate dismantled from the inside out by a combination of police investigations and anonymous financial disclosures delivered directly to the District Attorney's office.

Inside the library, the afternoon sunlight streamed through the tall Victorian windows, casting warm gold across the polished oak circulation desk.

Camila Hayes stood behind the counter, stamping the due date inside a thick hardcover novel for a smiling student. The silence in the room was once again the comfortable, familiar hush of turning pages and quiet concentration.

The bell above the entrance chimed softly.

Camila looked up.

Christian Baron walked through the doors. He was wearing another impeccable charcoal suit, but this time, he didn't have armed guards trailing behind him. He walked alone, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an expression that was entirely devoid of threat.

He approached the circulation desk, placed a small, elegant leather-bound notebook on the counter, and slid it toward her.

"What is this?" Camila asked, raising an eyebrow.

"A donation to the Hayes collection," Christian said smoothly, resting his hands lightly on the polished wood. "Complete financial transparency for every shipping port and logistics firm operating in the Tri-State area. Fully audited, legally clean, and completely under your jurisdiction."

Camila stared at the notebook, then slowly looked up at him. A slow, knowing smile spread across her face.

"You're trying to launder your corporate portfolio through a public library, Mr. Baron."

"I'm ensuring that my operations meet the highest possible standard of administrative compliance," Christian corrected smoothly, his mouth twitching into a genuine, unmasked smile that made him look remarkably dangerous yet deeply compelling. "And I was told the estate manager—pardon me, the head librarian—is exceptionally strict about enforcing the rules."

Camila picked up the notebook, her fingers brushing against the fine leather cover.

"Rules are rules," she replied softly, her voice carrying a playful warmth. "As long as you return your books on time."

Christian held her gaze for a long moment, the quiet tension between them dissolving into something warm and enduring. The most feared man in Manhattan had spent his entire life building walls to keep the world out, but as he stood across from the brilliant, unapologetic librarian, he realized he had finally found a home worth staying for.

"I'm always early," Christian said quietly. "Especially for the right chapter."
