Chapter 2 - Breaking the Seal

The metal ventilation grate popped out with a sharp, metallic screech that sounded like a gunshot in the confined space.
Before Daniel Mercer could turn around, Christian Baron slipped out of the shaft like a shadow, his weapon leveled dead at the traitor’s chest. Camila followed immediately, dropping silently onto the cold tile floor of the underground archive.
Daniel froze, the handheld radio slipping from his fingers and clattering against the concrete. His eyes darted from Christian to Camila, utter disbelief flickering across his features.
"You took the long way," Daniel forced out, a tight, nervous smile twitching at the corner of his mouth. He kept his hands raised palms-up, though his fingers inched closer to the edge of the desk where a small detonator rested. "I must admit, Camila, I underestimated you. I thought you'd simply walk through the main door like a good little employee."
"You've been working for my family’s enemies for years, Daniel," Camila said, her voice shaking slightly with suppressed rage, though her stance remained rock-solid. She stepped forward, keeping herself between Christian’s line of fire and the open book on the table. "You weren't a security guard. You were a warden."
"I was a custodian of secrets," Daniel corrected smoothly, his eyes shifting toward Christian. "And you, Mr. Baron... you shouldn't have come here. The people who want this book aren't just local thugs. They control the city's municipal grid, the police pensions, and half the federal judges in this state. You step out of your depth."
Christian didn't blink. His expression remained carved from dark granite. "I am the depth," he replied quietly, his voice carrying a chilling finality.
Camila didn't wait for them to trade threats. Her eyes dropped immediately to the open pages of the book—the Hayes collection, box 17. The yellowed paper was covered in her late mother's intricate, private annotation system: tiny triangles beside damaged bindings, dots beneath specific page numbers, and short, angled lines pointing toward the gutter of the spine.
As a child, she had thought they were simple restoration marks. Now, reading the sequence of dots and arrows, a hidden message leaped out at her. It wasn't just a book of local history; it was a ledger. A comprehensive financial and operational ledger detailing every illegal asset, offshore account, and political bribe funneled through Blackwood Library over the past three decades.
And right there on page 317 was a signature that made Camila’s breath catch in her throat: her father’s signature, alongside a municipal seal dated three days after his supposed death.
"My parents..." Camila whispered, the pieces violently clicking together in her mind. "They didn't die in an accident. They went into hiding. And you hunted them down."

Daniel’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, venomous glare. "They tried to steal everything we built, Camila. Just like you're trying right now."
With a sudden, violent lunge, Daniel slammed his hand down onto the detonator on the desk.
