Chapter 4 - The Truth on Page 317

The air in the subterranean tunnel was heavy and hot, smelling sharply of dust and scorched wiring.

Christian stood over the unconscious form of Daniel Mercer, checking his pulse with cold, professional efficiency before securing the man's hands with heavy zip ties pulled from his tactical vest. He then turned his attention back to Camila, who was kneeling on the dusty floor, gently picking up the ancient ledger.

Her hands trembled slightly as she opened the book to page 317.

In the pale beam of Christian’s flashlight, the handwritten notes glowed softly against the yellowed paper. It wasn't just a list of financial accounts or criminal assets; it was an insurance policy. A comprehensive, legally binding document proving that Camila’s parents had uncovered a massive municipal corruption ring involving high-ranking city officials, federal judges, and the very syndicate Christian Baron’s family had spent a lifetime controlling.

Her parents hadn't been criminals. They had been whistleblowers forced into hiding to protect their daughter, hunted down by corrupt operatives like Daniel Mercer who had infiltrated every institution in Manhattan.

"Your father was a brave man," Christian said quietly, stepping closer and looking down at the page over her shoulder. His voice lost its usual chilling edge, replaced by a deep, unexpected resonance. "He cost my family a great deal of money years ago. But he was right about where the rot was."

Camila looked up, her eyes shining with unshed tears in the dim light. "You knew him?"

"I knew of him," Christian admitted, his dark eyes holding hers with intense sincerity. "My father hunted him for months, believing he had stolen syndicate funds. But reading this... it turns out your father was trying to save us from an internal coup orchestrated by the very men who now sit on the city council."

Before Camila could process the revelation, a series of sharp, heavy thuds echoed from the upper end of the tunnel.

"Boss! Sector four is collapsing!" one of Christian’s guards shouted from the far end of the passage. "The local police and federal task force are surrounding the library perimeter! We have less than two minutes before the whole block is locked down!"

Christian didn't panic. He extended a strong, gloved hand down toward Camila to help her up.

"Can you run, Miss Hayes?" he asked, a faint, rare hint of a smile touching the corner of his lips.

Camila clutched the ledger tightly to her chest, took his hand, and pulled herself up. The fear that had gripped her heart all evening was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, resolute strength.

"Librarians always outrun the authorities," she replied steadily. "Follow me. There's an old utility elevator behind the municipal water main that even Daniel didn't know about."

With Christian clearing the path and Camila leading the way through the labyrinthine underground service tunnels, they bypassed the police blockade entirely, emerging into the cool, rain-washed air of a quiet Manhattan alleyway three blocks away from the Blackwood Library.
