Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point at the Grand Gala

The heavy glass doors of the Grand Astoria Ballroom swung open, leaking out the muffled sounds of jazz, expensive laughter, and the subtle clinking of crystal champagne flutes. But inside the corridor, the atmosphere was thick with a suffocating, unbearable tension. Khloe stood near the towering antique mirrors, her hands pressed against her lower back, fighting the dull, relentless ache that had radiated through her body for the past three hours.

She was six months pregnant, trapped inside an emerald silk maternity gown that felt less like high fashion and more like a suffocating straitjacket. Just a few feet away stood her husband, Derek. He held a glass of amber scotch, his jaw sharp, his tuxedo immaculate, laughing effortlessly with a city councilman. He hadn’t looked Khloe in the eye for over an hour. When she had timidly asked him if they could find a table because her feet were swelling, he had casually shifted his broad shoulders to physically block her from view, dismissing her with a cold, irritated snap.

“Not right now, Khloe. I’m networking.”

The words echoed in her mind like a physical slap. She knew she was being discarded. For months, she had endured the whispering, the knowing glances from the city's elite, and the undeniable truth of Derek’s affair with Vanessa—the sleek, red-clad real estate associate who had smoothly transitioned from assistant to full-blown mistress. Derek didn’t even bother hiding it anymore. He brought Vanessa to high-profile charity galas, flaunting her like a brand-new luxury watch while keeping Khloe hidden in the background like outdated furniture.

When Vanessa gracefully drifted across the room, gliding up to Derek and resting her manicured hand familiarly on his bicep while looking up at him with adoring, poisonous eyes, something inside Khloe finally snapped. The humiliation wasn't just a mental weight; it tasted like ash in her mouth, thick and choking. The baby kicked hard against her ribs, a frantic, protesting thud that mirrored her own desperate need to escape.

She turned on her heel, her designer heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor as she headed toward the exit. She didn't want to be the punchline of a joke everyone in the room already understood. She just wanted to reach her car, lock the doors, and let the tears fall in the dark.

"Khloe, wait."

She froze.

Derek’s voice cut through the corridor like a whip. He wasn't going to let her leave quietly. He couldn't risk anyone noticing his neglected wife walking out, because it might damage his pristine social image. Footsteps echoed behind her, and within seconds, Derek appeared, flanked closely by Vanessa.

"Where do you think you're going?" Derek demanded, his blue eyes flashing with annoyance rather than concern. "You don’t just walk out of a high-society event without telling me. People are looking."

"Are they?" Khloe turned to face him, her chin held high despite the overwhelming wave of exhaustion crashing over her. She cast a scathing look at Vanessa. "I think your mistress has your public relations covered, Derek. Let me go home."

Vanessa sighed with an exaggerated, patronizing patience that made Khloe’s blood boil. "Khloe, please don’t be dramatic. Derek is under immense pressure with the new Moretti development deal. He needs a supportive partner tonight, not someone acting like a jealous, hormonal burden."

"Shut up," Khloe whispered, her voice trembling with a rage she had suppressed for far too long. "Both of you, just stay away from me."

Derek’s face hardened. All the charming, polished veneer of the successful businessman melted away, revealing the cruel, controlling tyrant underneath. He lunged forward and grabbed Khloe’s elbow with a vicious, bruising grip.

"Listen to me very carefully," Derek hissed, leaning in close so his alcohol-laden breath washed over her face. "You are embarrassing yourself. You look huge, you're sweating, and you're throwing a public tantrum. Go back into that ballroom, sit at table four, and smile like a good wife. Or I swear to God, Khloe, I will freeze every joint account tomorrow morning and make sure you don't even have a dime for diapers."

Khloe stared at him, horror and fury warring inside her chest. This was the man who had once promised to cherish her. Now, he was threatening to render her destitute and homeless while she carried his child. Vanessa stood by, smirking, enjoying every second of Khloe’s degradation.

"I don't think she is."

The voice didn't shout. It didn't need to. It was deep, gravelly, and carried an inherent, terrifying weight that instantly commanded absolute silence in the hallway.

Derek flinched as if he had been physically struck. His grip on Khloe’s arm loosened instantly, his fingers slipping away as his entire posture folded inward. The arrogant real estate mogul vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a terrified, sweating subordinate facing his ultimate executioner.

Stepping out from the shadows near the antique coat check, dressed in a custom-tailored obsidian suit with a silk tie as dark as midnight, was a man whose very name made the city's elite tremble.

Dominic Moretti.

The undisputed, feared overlord of the city's underworld, and the multi-billion-dollar investor Derek had spent the last six months groveling just to get a five-minute meeting with.

Dominic’s sharp, obsidian eyes did not look at Derek. They locked entirely onto Khloe, scanning her pale face, the tight emerald silk of her dress, and the way her hand instinctively hovered over her swelling stomach. A dangerous, predatory intensity flashed in his gaze, and without a single word of warning, the most powerful man in the city walked straight past a paralyzed Derek, closed the distance between them, gently took Khloe’s face in his large, warm hand, and kissed her right there in the hallway in front of everyone.
