Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Takes the Field

The silence that followed Dominic Moretti’s kiss was absolute and suffocating. The distant jazz music from the ballroom felt a million miles away, and the air in the corridor seemed to drop ten degrees.

Khloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Her mind spun wildly as Dominic’s lips brushed hers—firm, warm, and utterly commanding, yet shockingly gentle. For months, she had felt invisible, unwanted, and discarded like trash. Yet here, in the darkest, most humiliating moment of her life, the most dangerous man in the state was publicly claiming her, wrapping his protective warmth around her trembling body as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.

When Dominic slowly pulled back, his dark eyes searched her face with an intensity that pierced straight through her defenses.

"Are you alright, Mrs. Vance?" Dominic’s voice was a low, resonant rumble that vibrated right through her chest.

Khloe swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I... I think I need to sit down," she whispered, her knees threatening to buckle under the sudden rush of adrenaline and physical exhaustion.

Before she could sway, Dominic’s arm swept around her waist, supporting her weight effortlessly. He didn't even spare a glance down at Derek, who stood frozen a foot away, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, his face completely drained of color.

"D-Dominic," Derek stammered, his voice cracking pathetically as he took a frantic half-step forward. "Sir... I don't understand. What are you... my wife, she’s... she’s just having a moment, she didn't mean to cause a scene—"

Dominic finally turned his head. The casual, almost tender expression he wore while looking at Khloe vanished instantly, replaced by a gaze so cold, lethal, and devoid of humanity that Derek physically recoiled, stumbling backward against the wall.

"Shut your mouth, Vance," Dominic said quietly, each word falling like a lead weight. "You have thirty seconds to explain to me why a man who treats his pregnant wife like stray dog filth deserves to breathe the same air as me, let alone sign a multi-million-dollar development contract with my firm."

Derek’s eyes bulged in absolute terror. "A... contract? Sir, we were scheduled to finalize the partnership on Monday! You can't pull out over... over a domestic dispute! She’s just emotional, she—"

"A domestic dispute?" Dominic interrupted, his voice dripping with venom. He tightened his arm protectively around Khloe’s waist. "I watched you threaten to leave the mother of your unborn child destitute in a public hallway. I watched your little side-piece over there smile while you did it. And you expect me to do business with a spineless coward who lacks basic human decency?"

Vanessa turned white as a sheet, stepping back into the shadows as if hoping the velvet curtains would swallow her whole. The realization that Derek’s catastrophic arrogance had just single-handedly torched his entire career, his reputation, and his financial empire hit her like a tidal wave. All her plotting, all her sleeping her way up the corporate ladder, had just been vaporized by a single kiss from a mafia kingpin.

"Dominic, please," Derek begged, his voice dropping to a desperate, pathetic whimper as he practically dropped to his knees on the marble floor. "My entire company is tied to this deal! If you walk away, I'm ruined! I'll lose everything!"

"Good," Dominic replied coldly. "Consider it my opening statement."

He looked down at Khloe, his expression softening instantly into something fiercely protective. "Come, Khloe. Let's get you out of this suffocating place. You deserve air, peace, and a hell of a lot more respect than this pathetic excuse of a man will ever understand."

Khloe looked at Derek one last time—the man who had terrorized her, belittled her, and tried to crush her spirit. He was kneeling on the floor, weeping openly, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his life's work reduced to ash. She didn't feel pity. She didn't feel anger. She only felt a profound, liberating emptiness where the pain used to be.

Turning away without a single parting word to her estranged husband, Khloe allowed Dominic Moretti to lead her down the grand corridor, away from the glittering ballroom, and straight out into a night that promised a terrifying, exhilarating new beginning.
