Chapter 3 - Inside the Fortress of the Underworld Boss

The sleek, armored black Maybach glided smoothly through the rain-slicked city streets, leaving the glittering lights of downtown far behind. Inside the vehicle, the partition separating the front cabin from the back was securely locked, plunging the plush leather interior into a quiet, cocoon-like sanctuary.

Khloe sat staring out the window, watching the neon lights blur into streaks of crimson and gold against the glass. Her hand still rested protectively over her six-month pregnant belly. The baby had finally quieted down, lulled by the smooth motion of the car.

Across from her sat Dominic Moretti. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his crisp white sleeves to reveal strong, corded forearms etched with faint, faded scars—silent testaments to a violent past most people only whispered about in fear. He wasn't looking at her with pity or predatory hunger; he was watching her with a calm, patient attentiveness that made her feel more seen than Derek had in five years of marriage.

"You're shaking," Dominic noted quietly, reaching over to place a warm, heavy cashmere blanket across her shoulders.

"I'm just... processing," Khloe admitted, her voice barely above a whisper as she pulled the blanket tighter around herself. She turned her gaze toward him, her blue eyes searching his face. "Why did you do that back there, Dominic? You didn't even know me. For all you knew, I was just another socialite throwing a tantrum."

Dominic let out a low, humorless chuckle, leaning back against the leather seat. "Khloe, I’ve spent the last twenty years running the most ruthless syndicate in this city. I can smell lies, fear, and cruelty from a mile away. I’ve been watching Derek Vance for months. He’s a hollow, arrogant parasite who built his entire career on stolen credit and ruthless ambition. And when I saw him treat you the way he did tonight—in that dress, carrying his child—something in me simply refused to let him win."

"You risked a multi-million-dollar real estate deal just to ruin him," Khloe pointed out, a faint, disbelieving smile touching the corners of her lips.

"Money is renewable," Dominic replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute conviction. "Dignity, human life, and the safety of a mother carrying an innocent child are not. Vance thinks he’s king of the world because he has a bank account. By tomorrow morning, he won't even have a chair to sit on."

He wasn't exaggerating. Within twenty-four hours, Dominic’s vast financial network systematically dismantled Derek’s real estate empire. Every investor pulled out, every bank called in their loans, and every shell company Derek used to hide his illegal kickbacks was exposed to federal regulators. By Sunday evening, Derek Vance wasn't just broke; he was facing federal indictment for corporate fraud and embezzlement.

The car slowed to a halt, pulling through a set of massive, ornate wrought-iron gates that parted automatically for the Maybach. They entered a sprawling private estate nestled high in the hills overlooking the ocean. A magnificent stone mansion, glowing with warm amber lights and surrounded by manicured gardens, stood like a modern fortress against the dark sea.

"Where are we?" Khloe asked, her eyes widening as the car parked near the grand double front doors.

"Home, for as long as you need it," Dominic said smoothly, stepping out of the vehicle and opening her door, extending a large, calloused hand to help her step down. "My estate has twenty-four-hour security, a private medical wing with the best obstetricians in the country on retainer, and absolutely zero tolerance for men who raise their voices or their hands."

As Khloe placed her hand in his and stepped out onto the stone patio, breathing in the crisp, clean ocean air, a strange, overwhelming sense of safety washed over her. For the first time in years, she wasn't walking on eggshells. She wasn't an obligation.

She was a survivor stepping into her kingdom.
