Chapter 4 - The Downfall of Derek and the Rise of Khloe

Two weeks inside Dominic’s sprawling estate felt like stepping into an entirely different dimension of reality. The constant knot of anxiety that had permanently lived in Khloe’s stomach during her marriage had completely dissolved. She spent her mornings drinking herbal tea in a sunroom overlooking the crashing waves, her afternoons consulting with top-tier pediatric specialists arranged by Dominic, and her evenings sharing quiet, surprisingly gentle dinners with the man the city feared most.
Dominic Moretti, despite his lethal reputation in the underworld, proved to be the most attentive, respectful companion Khloe had ever known. He never hovered, never demanded gratitude, and made sure she had absolute autonomy over her life and her future child.
Meanwhile, out in the real world, Derek Vance’s life was burning entirely to ash.
Seated in a cold, fluorescent-lit holding room at the downtown federal precinct, Derek stared blankly at the metal table in front of him. His hair was disheveled, his expensive tuxedo replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit. The federal marshals hadn't just frozen his accounts; they had seized his penthouse, his luxury cars, and every single asset tied to his name.
The door banged open, and Vanessa walked in, her face twisted in a mask of hysterical fury. She had also been arrested as an accomplice in Derek’s corporate embezzlement scheme.
"This is all your fault!" Vanessa screamed, lunging across the table before the guard could stop her, grabbing the front of Derek’s jumpsuit and shaking him violently. "You promised me financial security! You said Dominic Moretti was in the bag! You arrogant idiot, you lost everything because you couldn't keep your hands off your pregnant wife and stop playing the big shot!"
"Get off me!" Derek snarled, shoving her away with a vicious grunt as bitterness and despair poisoned whatever affection they once had. "My wife?! You’re the one who egged me on! You whispered in my ear every single day telling me to kick her to the curb! You wanted her life, Vanessa! Well, look where we are now!"
"You're finished, Derek," Vanessa spat, tears of pure rage streaming down her face as the guards pulled her back toward her cell. "You're going to prison for twenty years, and I hope every single day of it is absolute hell!"
The heavy steel door slammed shut, leaving Derek alone in the silence of his ruin. He buried his face in his cuffed hands, finally weeping—not out of remorse for what he had done to Khloe, but out of pure, agonizing self-pity. He had possessed everything: a loyal wife, a growing family, and a booming empire. And he had thrown it all away for vanity, cruelty, and arrogance.
Back at the Moretti estate, Khloe was standing in the grand library, looking through a stack of legal documents delivered by Dominic’s head attorney.
Dominic walked in quietly, holding two cups of chamomile tea, handing one to her with a gentle smile. "How are the divorce papers looking?" he asked softly.
Khloe looked up, a bright, genuine smile illuminating her face—the kind of smile she hadn't worn in years. "They're signed, sealed, and being filed by morning. My lawyer managed to secure full custody, all remaining independent trust funds, and a restraining order that keeps Derek within five hundred feet of a prison cell for the rest of his natural life."
Dominic nodded approvingly, taking a sip of his tea. "Good. Because you deserve a completely clean slate, Khloe. No shadows, no baggage. Just you, your baby, and whatever future you want to build."
Khloe’s heart skipped a beat. She set her teacup down on the mahogany desk and turned to face him fully, her blue eyes shining with a quiet, fierce courage.
"And what if the future I want... includes you?" she asked softly, holding her breath.

Dominic froze. The ruthless underworld king, a man who had faced down rival cartels and corrupt politicians without blinking, suddenly looked entirely vulnerable. He set his cup down slowly, stepped closer, and gently cupped her cheek with his thumb, his dark eyes burning with unmasked devotion.
"Khloe," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I would burn down a thousand empires just to spend the rest of my life making sure you never shed another tear."
