Chapter 28 - The Financial Siege

The warning wasn't an empty threat. Within forty-eight hours, the machinery of Vanguard Global Trust began its systematic assault on Larksburg Court.
It started innocently enough. Several elderly residents received automated letters from mortgage processors stating their accounts had been abruptly transferred to an out-of-state financial institution, accompanied by sudden, unexplained hikes in escrow requirements. Then, local small businesses supporting the veterans center reported sudden audits, delayed supply shipments, and mysterious commercial lease reviews.
On Thursday evening, Denise Parker rushed into my house, looking frantic as she held a thick white envelope.
"Victoria, look at this!" Denise gasped, dropping the letter onto my kitchen island. "My parents just got a notice from their mortgage lender. Their fixed-rate loan has been flagged for 'administrative restructuring' under an obscure clause controlled by Vanguard Global Trust. They're demanding an immediate ten-thousand-dollar refinancing fee within two weeks or face default!"
I picked up the paper, scanning the legal jargon. It was a classic predatory squeeze—using manufactured financial pressure to force long-term homeowners into distress sales so Vanguard could scoop up the land at pennies on the dollar.
"They're trying to starve the neighborhood out," I said, my jaw tightening. "They couldn't beat us on the physical ground or through zoning courts, so they're attacking our bank accounts."
"What are we going to do?" Denise asked, her voice trembling with anxiety. "My parents have lived in this house for thirty years. They can't just up and move!"
"We don't move," I replied firmly. "We counter-attack."
I dialed Jennie Parker’s number. As an investigative tech journalist with deep underground networks, Jennie was uniquely equipped to track illicit financial flows.

"Jennie," I said the second she answered. "I need you to dig into Vanguard Global Trust's offshore holdings. Evelyn Sterling-Vance is trying a financial squeeze on Larksburg Court. Let's find out where her funding is actually coming from."
On the other end of the line, Jennie let out a sharp, eager laugh. "You got it, Victoria. Give me twenty-four hours, and I'll show you what skeletons Evelyn has buried in her Swiss bank accounts."
