Chapter 30 - The Neighborhood Defense Fund

Word of the financial harassment spread rapidly through Larksburg Court, but instead of dividing the community, it forged an unbreakable bond of solidarity. Retired veterans, young families, and local business owners mobilized with military-grade precision.

Under the leadership of seventy-eight-year-old Walt Griffin, the neighborhood established the Larksburg Mutual Defense & Legal Aid Fund. Residents who had spare savings pooled their resources to help neighbors facing immediate mortgage pressure. Ethan Caldwell—continuing his remarkable redemption arc—donated his entire college savings account to the fund, refusing to let his family name be associated with Evelyn's predatory tactics any longer.

On Saturday afternoon, a community meeting was held inside the packed Larksburg Veterans Support Center. Over three hundred people filled the hall, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in absolute unity.

Walt Griffin stood at the podium, leaning on his cane, his weathered face beaming with fierce pride.

"Listen to me, friends!" Walt boomed, his raspy voice echoing off the walls. "They think money is the most powerful weapon on earth. They think a few corporate suits can intimidate us out of the homes we built with our own hands. But they don't know what happens when a community stands shoulder-to-shoulder behind an Army Ranger who knows how to hold a line!"

The room erupted into roaring applause.

I stood near the back of the hall, watching the energy surge through the crowd. We weren't just defending houses anymore; we were defending a sanctuary.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the community center swung open. A pair of private security guards stepped aside, and Evelyn Sterling-Vance walked into the hall, flanked by two corporate attorneys holding thick folders. The room instantly fell dead silent.

Evelyn walked down the center aisle with arrogant poise, stopping ten feet from the podium. She looked around the room with a sneer of utter disdain.

"Save your grandstanding, old man," Evelyn said loudly, locking her cold eyes on Walt. "As of midnight tonight, Vanguard Global Trust holds the master mortgage notes for over sixty percent of this neighborhood. Unless every single homeowner pays their ten-thousand-dollar restructuring fee by Monday morning, foreclosure proceedings begin immediately. You can't fight math, Sergeant."

She turned her gaze toward me, her smile dripping with venom. "Enjoy your porch while you still own it."
