Chapter 35 - Shadows of the Past

While Larksburg Court thrived in its newfound peace, the broader corporate world was still picking through the wreckage of the Sterling-Vance empire. Federal investigators were methodically untangling years of offshore financial corruption, tracing illicit accounts across the globe.
I received an unexpected, encrypted email on a Tuesday evening. The sender address was masked, but the digital signature belonged to an internal compliance officer within the U.S. Department of Justice’s financial crimes division.
“Sergeant Vance,” the message read. “We have recovered a series of encrypted communications from Evelyn Sterling-Vance’s primary terminal prior to her arrest. They indicate that Vanguard Global Trust was merely a front for a broader syndicate of predatory land speculators who targeted historical neighborhoods across multiple states. However, our investigation confirms that your proactive resistance and the public exposure of their shell companies effectively crippled their entire national network. You single-handedly prevented the displacement of thousands of families. Thank you for your service.”
I closed the laptop screen, leaning back in my chair. I hadn't fought those battles for a commendation or a government pat on the back. I had fought because standing by while predators victimized innocent people simply wasn't in my DNA.
My phone buzzed on the desk. It was a text message from Denise Parker: ‘Hey Victoria! Family barbecue at my place tonight at six. Bring your famous potato salad. No corporate takeovers allowed!’

I laughed out loud, typing back a quick reply: ‘On my way. And I’m bringing extra.’
The ghosts of corporate greed were finally laid to rest. The perimeter was secure, the community was whole, and my life on Larksburg Court was anchored in peace, purpose, and unbreakable friendship.
