Chapter 3: The Empire Built on a Lie

Chapter 3: The Empire Built on a Lie

The expression on Damian's face was something I would remember forever.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Not even hatred.

It was confusion.

Pure, undeniable confusion.

Because Damian Cross had spent his entire life believing he understood power.

He believed power was money.

Power was influence.

Power was having people answer your calls at any hour of the day.

But standing there in the bedroom, surrounded by the consequences of his own actions...

He finally discovered the most dangerous kind of power.

Knowledge.

And I had more of it than anyone.

"That is impossible."

Damian's voice was barely a whisper.

His assistant lowered his eyes.

"Sir, the documents are real."

"No."

Damian shook his head.

"No, they can't be."

He looked at me again.

"You don't understand how this company works."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that sentence perfectly described our entire marriage.

Damian thought I didn't understand.

He thought I was just a woman who signed papers when he placed them in front of me.

A wife who smiled beside him at charity events.

A woman whose greatest achievement was carrying his children.

He never realized I was the person who understood everything.

"You should choose your words carefully," I said.

His eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"Because for years, you told everyone I knew nothing about business."

I stepped closer.

"But tonight, everyone is going to discover the truth."

The truth was simple.

Cross Capital had never been Damian's creation alone.

When Damian started the company, he had ambition.

But ambition without strategy was dangerous.

He had brilliant ideas.

But he was reckless.

He made emotional decisions.

He trusted the wrong people.

And when investors became nervous, I was the one who saved him.

I was the one who rebuilt his financial structure.

I created protections.

Emergency clauses.

Ownership safeguards.

The same safeguards that would one day protect the company from him.

At the time, I didn't create them to hurt Damian.

I created them because I loved him.

I wanted to protect our future.

I wanted us to build something together.

But love can make people blind.

And sometimes betrayal forces them to open their eyes.

The assistant handed Damian a tablet.

He read the screen.

His face changed with every line.

The board review.

The investor complaints.

The emergency shareholder meeting.

The legal filings.

Everything was happening exactly as planned.

But there was one thing I hadn't expected.

His reaction.

I expected anger.

I expected him to attack me.

I expected him to blame me.

Instead...

He looked hurt.

For one brief moment, I saw the man I thought I married.

The man who used to hold my hand.

The man who promised we would grow old together.

Then I remembered the sound of his laughter while my head hit the marble floor.

The memory erased every trace of sympathy.

"You were planning this before tonight."

His voice was quieter now.

I didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

"When did you start?"

I looked at him.

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

His eyes became colder.

"Because that means every moment between us was a lie."

I stared at him.

"No, Damian."

I shook my head.

"That's the part you still don't understand."

I pointed toward the door.

"Every moment was real."

He looked confused.

"I loved you."

The words surprised him.

"But you stopped loving me."

My voice remained calm.

"You replaced me."

"Humiliated me."

"Used me."

I swallowed the pain that tried to return.

"And then you convinced yourself I was too weak to leave."

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Someone had dropped a glass.

The guests were beginning to realize something was wrong.

The perfect party was falling apart.

Damian walked toward the bedroom door.

Then stopped.

"You're pregnant."

The sentence sounded strange.

Like he had only just remembered.

I looked at him.

"Yes."

"With my children."

I didn't respond.

His expression hardened.

"You wouldn't destroy their future just to hurt me."

That was the first mistake he made.

He still believed this was about revenge.

It wasn't.

It was about protection.

"I am not destroying anything," I said.

"I am saving them."

His eyes narrowed.

"From me?"

I held his gaze.

"From becoming like you."

The words hit harder than any accusation.

For the first time...

Damian had no response.

Then his phone rang.

Again.

This time, he hesitated before answering.

Everyone in the room felt it.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The possibility that Damian Cross was no longer in control.

He pressed the button.

"Yes?"

A voice came through.

I couldn't hear everything.

Only Damian's reaction.

"What?"

A pause.

"No, that's impossible."

Another pause.

Then his face turned completely pale.

"Who filed the lawsuit?"

Silence.

Then:

"Say that again."

His fingers tightened around the phone.

"What do you mean... Evelyn's father?"

My heart stopped.

For the first time that night...

I felt something I didn't expect.

Fear.

Because my father had been dead for six years.

And yet someone had just filed a lawsuit using his name.

Damian slowly lowered the phone.

He looked at me.

But this time...

He wasn't looking at his enemy.

He was looking at someone who knew a secret he didn't.

"Your father is alive."

The room went silent.

My breath caught.

Because there was one truth I had buried deeper than any business document.

A truth even Damian didn't know.

A truth that could change everything.

My father hadn't disappeared.

He hadn't died.

He had been waiting.

May you like

And now...

He was coming back.
