Chapter 4: The Ghost Who Owned the Future

Chapter 4: The Ghost Who Owned the Future

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Damian.

Not his assistant.

Not even me.

The entire penthouse seemed frozen in time.

The music downstairs had stopped completely. The laughter of wealthy investors and powerful executives had been replaced by whispers.

Everyone could feel it.

Something bigger than a business dispute was happening.

Something personal.

Something dangerous.

Damian stared at me as if he was seeing me for the first time.

"Your father is alive?"

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

Confused.

I looked away.

Because that was the one question I wasn't ready to answer.

Not yet.

My father, Jonathan Hart, was a legend in the financial world.

Not because he owned the biggest company.

Not because his face appeared on magazine covers.

He avoided attention.

He believed the most powerful people were often the ones nobody noticed.

Damian admired him once.

Before he married me.

Before he learned that Jonathan Hart was not just my father.

He was the person who taught me everything.

How to read contracts.

How to recognize manipulation.

How to find the weakness inside a powerful person's empire.

But six years ago, Jonathan vanished.

The world believed he had died after a private plane accident.

There was never a body.

Only a report.

Only a story.

And everyone accepted it.

Everyone except me.

Because my father had taught me one thing.

Never trust a conclusion created by someone else.

Damian stepped closer.

"You knew."

I remained silent.

"You knew he was alive."

My silence angered him.

"You let me believe your family was gone."

I looked at him.

"You let yourself believe whatever was convenient."

His expression darkened.

"Don't play games with me."

A bitter smile appeared on my face.

"Games?"

I looked around the room.

"Damian, you dragged your pregnant wife across the floor for entertainment."

His jaw tightened.

"You humiliated me in front of your friends."

"You brought your lover into our home."

"You made me feel powerless."

I stepped closer.

"So don't stand there and pretend you are the victim because one secret finally came back to you."

Before Damian could respond, his assistant interrupted.

"Mr. Cross..."

Everyone looked toward him.

His face was pale.

"There is another update."

Damian turned.

"What now?"

The assistant swallowed.

"The board members aren't just reviewing your position."

A pause.

"They are questioning whether you were ever the true controlling executive of Cross Capital."

The room went silent.

Damian stared.

"What are you saying?"

"The investors believe the original ownership structure was hidden."

The assistant looked at me.

"They believe Mrs. Cross has been the majority strategic controller since the beginning."

A wave of whispers spread through the hallway.

The guests downstairs had started gathering.

People who came to celebrate Damian were now watching him fall.

And they were watching me rise.

One of the investors, Richard Vale, stepped forward.

He was one of Damian's oldest partners.

A man who had ignored me for years.

A man who once told Damian:

"A brilliant man needs a beautiful wife beside him, not a business partner."

Tonight, he couldn't even look me in the eye.

"Evelyn..."

His voice was uncertain.

"I need to understand."

I looked at him.

"Understand what?"

"The company."

I smiled.

"The company was never the problem."

Richard frowned.

"Then what was?"

I glanced toward Damian.

"Him."

The room became uncomfortable.

Because everyone knew.

They had all seen it.

They had watched Damian treat people like tools.

They had laughed when he mocked employees.

They had ignored his arrogance because he made money.

Until the day he stopped being useful.

Damian suddenly grabbed his jacket.

"I'm leaving."

Nobody answered.

He walked toward the elevator.

Then stopped.

"You think you've won?"

I turned.

His eyes were filled with anger again.

Good.

The real Damian was returning.

"You think taking my company makes you powerful?"

I said nothing.

He stepped closer.

"You don't know what you've started."

I looked at him calmly.

"No."

I corrected him.

"You don't know what you started."

The elevator doors opened.

Damian stepped inside.

But before they closed, he said one sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

"Ask your father why he really disappeared."

The doors closed.

And for the first time that night...

I felt uncertain.

Because Damian wasn't threatening me.

He was warning me.

Two hours later, I sat inside the private hospital room where my doctor insisted I stay overnight.

The stress had caused complications.

The twins needed monitoring.

I stared through the window at the city lights.

My victory should have felt satisfying.

But it didn't.

Because one question kept repeating in my mind.

Why had my father returned now?

Why had he chosen this exact moment?

And why did Damian know something about his disappearance?

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

My blood went cold.

"Evelyn, if you are reading this, it means Damian has finally lost control."

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

"But before you destroy him..."

"You need to know the truth about your husband."

A third message arrived.

"Damian Cross did not betray you alone."

My heartbeat accelerated.

Because beneath the message was a name.

A name I hadn't seen in years.

A name connected to the darkest secret of my family.

May you like

Jonathan Hart.

My father.
