Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Mask

Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Mask

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Then I turned it back on.

Again.

And again.

As if the words might somehow change.

But they didn't.

Damian Cross did not betray you alone.

The sentence felt heavier than any insult he had ever thrown at me.

Because betrayal was something I understood.

Pain was something I survived.

But this...

This suggested that the entire story I believed in was incomplete.

I had spent years believing Damian was the villain.

The man who destroyed our marriage.

The man who chose another woman.

The man who humiliated me.

But what if he wasn't the only one hiding something?

The hospital room was quiet except for the soft beeping of the monitors.

My doctor had warned me again.

"No more stress, Evelyn."

I almost laughed.

Stress had become my permanent companion.

For years, I had carried secrets.

Pain.

Disappointment.

And now, apparently, a family mystery.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

The twins were moving.

A reminder that whatever happened next...

I couldn't just think about myself anymore.

I had two lives depending on my decisions.

"Mommy is going to figure this out," I whispered.

"Whatever the truth is."

At 3:00 in the morning, the hospital room door opened.

I immediately reached for the emergency button.

But I stopped.

Because the person standing there was someone I never expected to see.

My father.

Jonathan Hart.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

For six years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined screaming.

Crying.

Demanding answers.

Instead...

I felt nothing.

Only silence.

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Evelyn."

My hands tightened around the blanket.

"Don't."

The word stopped him.

"I don't know what you expect me to say."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You don't know."

I looked at the man who disappeared when I needed him most.

"You weren't there when I thought you were dead."

"You weren't there when I married Damian."

"You weren't there when everything started falling apart."

His face showed pain.

"I wanted to protect you."

The sentence made me angry.

"Everyone always says that."

I looked away.

"Protect me."

"Save me."

"Help me."

"But nobody ever asks what I want."

My father walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like approaching someone injured.

Because he knew he had hurt me.

"I made mistakes."

I didn't answer.

"Big ones."

He sat down.

"But Damian Cross was never the man you thought he was."

My eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

He took a deep breath.

"Before you married him, Damian came to me."

That surprised me.

"Why?"

"Because he wanted access."

"To what?"

My father looked at me.

"Your inheritance."

The room became colder.

"What?"

"Your grandfather created a private investment trust before he died."

I remembered.

The trust existed.

But I never cared about it.

My father managed everything.

"Damian knew about it?"

"He knew."

My father nodded.

"He approached me pretending to want a partnership."

A pause.

"But what he really wanted was you."

My stomach tightened.

"No."

My father looked guilty.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

I shook my head.

"That's not possible."

Because despite everything Damian did...

A small part of me still remembered the beginning.

The man who made me laugh.

The man who held my hand.

The man who told me I was the only person who understood him.

My father continued.

"At first, I thought he changed."

"He convinced me."

"He convinced everyone."

"But then I discovered something."

"What?"

His eyes became serious.

"Damian wasn't acting alone."

My heartbeat increased.

"Who was helping him?"

My father looked toward the window.

And for the first time...

I saw fear in his eyes.

A fear I had never seen before.

"Someone inside your family."

The words hit me harder than anything else.

"My family?"

He nodded.

"Someone who knew everything."

"Someone who helped Damian get close to you."

I stared at him.

"Who?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pulled out an old envelope.

My name was written on the front.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

"I kept this for six years."

"Why?"

"Because I hoped you would never need it."

My hands trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Damian.

Standing beside another person.

A person I knew.

A person I trusted.

A person who had been at my wedding.

My breath stopped.

Because behind Damian stood...

Celeste Monroe.

But she wasn't smiling.

She wasn't Damian's lover.

She was holding a document.

And the date on it was impossible.

The photograph was taken...

three months before Damian and I ever met.

I looked at my father.

"What does this mean?"

He whispered:

"It means the affair wasn't the beginning."

"It was part of the plan."

The room went silent.

My entire understanding of the past collapsed.

Damian didn't just betray me.

He entered my life with a purpose.

But the biggest question remained.

Why?

Then my phone received another message.

This time from Damian.

One sentence.

One warning.

"Evelyn, if your father told you the truth..."

A second message appeared.

"Ask him what he did to my family first."

I looked up.

My father had gone completely pale.

Because whatever happened between Damian and my father...

It was older than my marriage.

May you like

Older than my betrayal.

And possibly the reason my entire life had been destroyed.
