Chapter 7: The Return of the King

Chapter 7: The Return of the King

The world thought Alexander Cross was dead.

For six years, his name had existed only in old financial reports and forgotten headlines.

A fallen billionaire.

A man who lost everything.

A ghost.

But ghosts don't walk into billion-dollar boardrooms.

They don't stand beside their sons.

And they don't smile for cameras.

Yet there he was.

Alive.

Powerful.

And standing next to Damian.

The two men who had destroyed my sense of reality were now standing together.

Father and son.

United.

The first thing I noticed was not Alexander's wealth.

Not the expensive suit.

Not the army of lawyers surrounding him.

It was his eyes.

Cold.

Calculating.

The same eyes Damian had when he wanted to hurt someone.

Suddenly, I understood.

Damian didn't inherit his cruelty.

He learned it.

From him.

Three hours after the news broke, Alexander Cross requested a private meeting.

My lawyers immediately refused.

"Absolutely not," Victoria said.

"He has no reason to be inside your life."

I looked at the documents in front of me.

"The problem is..."

Everyone looked at me.

"He already is."

Victoria frowned.

"What do you mean?"

I touched the photograph of Alexander and Damian.

"They have been planning something for years."

My father remained silent.

That worried me more than anything.

Because Jonathan Hart wasn't afraid of many people.

But Alexander Cross terrified him.

The meeting happened the next morning.

Not at a restaurant.

Not at an office.

At a private legal facility surrounded by security.

Everyone came prepared.

My lawyers.

Damian's lawyers.

Alexander's lawyers.

A battlefield disguised as a conversation.

When Damian entered the room, our eyes met.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

He looked different.

Not weaker.

Not defeated.

Just different.

Like someone who had finally stopped pretending.

"You look tired," he said.

I almost smiled.

"Concerned?"

"No."

His expression remained cold.

"I was just surprised."

"By what?"

"That you are still fighting."

I looked at him.

"You thought I would give up?"

His silence answered.

Alexander entered moments later.

The entire room changed.

People stood.

Not because they respected him.

Because they feared him.

He walked slowly toward the table.

Then looked at me.

"Evelyn Hart."

His voice was calm.

"I finally meet the woman who destroyed my son's empire."

I didn't move.

"Your son destroyed his own empire."

A small smile appeared on Alexander's face.

Interesting.

He wasn't angry.

He was impressed.

"You have your father's courage."

My expression hardened.

"Don't compare me to him."

"Why?"

"Because my father protected people."

Alexander sat down.

"And I built an empire."

"An empire built on fear."

His smile disappeared slightly.

Good.

I wanted him to know I wasn't Damian.

I wasn't intimidated.

Alexander placed a folder on the table.

"You believe Damian betrayed you."

I looked at him.

"He did."

"Yes."

The answer surprised me.

Alexander continued:

"He did."

"Because I told him to."

The room became silent.

Even Damian looked uncomfortable.

I stared.

"What?"

Alexander leaned back.

"Everything Damian did was designed to push you away."

"Why?"

"Because you were the only person who could stop us."

My stomach tightened.

"Stop you from what?"

Alexander smiled.

"From taking what was always supposed to be mine."

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

My family's documents.

My grandfather's trust agreements.

My inheritance records.

But there was something else.

A signature.

A name.

A hidden agreement.

I looked closer.

And my heart stopped.

Because the document was signed by someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping Alexander all along.

Someone who had access to my entire life.

"Impossible."

My voice was barely audible.

Damian looked at me.

"What did you find?"

I didn't answer.

Because the person behind everything...

The person who connected my family, Damian, and Alexander...

Was someone I never suspected.

The signature belonged to:

My own mother.

The room spun.

My mother had been dead for ten years.

She couldn't defend herself.

She couldn't explain.

And yet...

Her name was everywhere.

Alexander watched my reaction carefully.

"Now you understand."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"I understand that you want me to believe your version."

A flicker of surprise crossed his face.

Most people probably broke when they saw that document.

But I had learned something.

Powerful people loved controlling stories.

And the first person who tells a story is not always telling the truth.

Damian suddenly spoke.

"Father."

Everyone looked at him.

He rarely interrupted Alexander.

"Enough."

Alexander turned slowly.

"Excuse me?"

Damian's jaw tightened.

"This wasn't supposed to involve her pregnancy."

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

For the first time...

Damian sounded like he was protecting me.

Alexander noticed too.

And he smiled.

A dangerous smile.

"Careful, son."

"Don't forget why we started this."

Damian looked away.

But I saw it.

Regret.

A tiny crack in the man who had destroyed me.

That night, I returned to my penthouse.

The same place where Damian had dragged me across the floor.

The same place where he laughed.

But something was different.

I wasn't the woman who lay helpless on the marble anymore.

I walked through the room slowly.

Then stopped.

Because sitting on my desk was an envelope.

No security alert.

No record of entry.

Someone had placed it there without being detected.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph taken twenty years ago.

My mother.

Alexander Cross.

Jonathan Hart.

And a fourth person.

A person who was still alive.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

"The real enemy is still watching."

I turned the picture over.

And my blood froze.

Because the fourth person...

Was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been standing beside me throughout this entire war.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who knew all my secrets.

Victoria Hayes.

My attorney.

May you like

My closest ally.

My friend.
