Chapter 10 - The Turning Point at the OfficeThe fallout from Raymond’s desperate visit hit the Bennett household like a tidal wave. When Raymond returned home empty-handed, shouting in frustration and kicking the living room wall, Linda finally snapped.

For thirty years, Linda had played the dutiful, silent enabler. She had swallowed her own dignity, smoothed over her husband’s cruelty, and convinced herself that maintaining the illusion of a strong, patriarchal family was more important than protecting her children equitably. But seeing her husband reduced to a desperate, raging supplicant—and realizing that their daughter had completely outgrown their control—shattered the final illusions holding her together.
"You did this, Raymond," Linda said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she walked down the stairs holding a packed overnight bag.
Raymond stopped pacing, staring at his wife in sheer disbelief. "Linda? What are you doing? Where are you going?"
"I'm going to stay at my sister Susan’s house for a while," Linda replied, zipping her suitcase with trembling hands. "For thirty years, I watched you crush Claire's spirit, treat her like an unpaid servant, and favor Ethan to the point of turning him into a spoiled, helpless parasite. I smiled and poured the coffee because I was afraid of your temper. But Claire was right. We didn't raise a family; we built a dictatorship where you demanded loyalty while offering nothing in return."
Ethan appeared at the top of the stairs, his eyes wide with adolescent panic as he watched his mother prepare to leave. "Mom? You're leaving too? Who's going to do the laundry? Who's going to help me with my fraternity form submissions?"

Linda looked at her son with a heartbreaking mixture of sorrow and clarity. "Learn to do it yourself, Ethan. We both raised you to believe the world owed you everything for simply existing. It’s time you learned how much that actually costs."
Without another word, Linda walked past her stunned husband and son, out the front door, and into her sister's car waiting in the driveway. The Bennett household was officially vacant of everyone except the architect of its destruction.
