Raymond Bennett stood in the middle of his commercial construction yard on a freezing Thursday morning, his face dark with fury as he stared at a stack of delayed permits and rejected municipal filings.
For twenty years, Raymond had prided himself on being a self-made man, a tough-as-nails contractor who could build anything from scratch. But he had always outsourced the invisible machinery of his business—the meticulous paperwork, compliance tracking, environmental safety audits, and municipal liaison work—to Claire. He had treated her like an unpaid administrative assistant, assuming anyone could do it.
"Boss, the city just kicked back the structural engineering clearance for the Oak Street project," his lead foreman, Marcus, said, wiping grease from his hands onto a rag. "They’re saying the zoning compliance forms are missing the secondary environmental waiver. If we don’t resubmit by tomorrow noon, we lose the municipal contract penalty-free clause. That’s a hundred grand down the drain."
Raymond felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. He grabbed his tablet, his thick fingers fumbling clumsily over the screen as he tried to log into the city’s contractor portal. But Claire had changed the master administrator password before she left, locking him out completely.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Claire’s number for the hundredth time. As expected, it went straight to a dead-end carrier tone. Desperation clawed at his chest. Without her, his business was grinding to a catastrophic halt, and the banks were starting to ask uncomfortable questions.
