Chapter 11 - Ethan’s Reality CheckWith both Claire and Linda gone, and the family business spiraling toward insolvency, Raymond’s attention shifted entirely to Ethan, expecting his college-graduate son to step up and share the burden. But Ethan was entirely unequipped for real-world hardship.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Raymond marched into Ethan’s bedroom, throwing a thick stack of past-due bills onto the unmade bed.

"Get up," Raymond ordered harshly. "Your mother left, the business is facing a federal compliance review, and I need you to help me organize these vendor accounts. You have a college degree in business administration, for Christ's sake! Start acting like a man!"

Ethan sat up slowly, staring at the bills with a mixture of resentment and panic. He pushed the papers away. "Dad, my degree was in sports marketing and general management! I don't know anything about forensic accounting or commercial contractor compliance! You and Mom always bailed me out, paid my tuition, bought me a car, and handled every adult responsibility I ever faced! You never taught me how to do any of this!"

"I gave you everything!" Raymond roared, veins bulging in his neck. "I bought you a brand-new car the day you graduated! I told the world you were worth it!"

"Yeah, and you handed Claire a five-thousand-dollar bill for living in her childhood bedroom while she worked herself to the bone to keep this family afloat!" Ethan shouted back, finally breaking through his lifelong entitlement with a flash of bitter insight. "You didn't invest in me, Dad. You spoiled me into helplessness, and you exploited Claire until she had enough self-respect to walk away. We both failed because you only know how to measure people by what they can do for your ego!"

Raymond recoiled as if he had been physically struck. The words hung in the stale bedroom air, echoing the exact same painful truth Claire had realized months ago. For the first time, the invincible contractor was forced to look in the mirror and see the wreckage of his own making.
