He had attended several months of individual counseling, learning how to separate his self-worth from his corporate dominance and addressing the emotional rigidity that had driven his family away.
Linda had spent months living with her sister, slowly reclaiming her independence, taking painting classes, and establishing healthy boundaries before even considering speaking to Raymond about couples therapy.
Ethan had dropped out of his fraternity, taken a part-time job at a local logistics warehouse, and enrolled in evening accounting classes to understand how the real world operated without a safety net. When he called me out of the blue one Tuesday afternoon, his voice was humble and sincere.
"Hey, Claire," Ethan said quietly. "I just wanted to let you know... I got my own apartment lease signed today. Roommates, cheap furniture, and a strict budget. I finally balanced my own checkbook without calling anyone for help."
I smiled, leaning back against my office chair. "I'm proud of you, Ethan. That’s a huge step."
