Chapter 53 - Dinner with a ViperThe meeting was arranged for Thursday evening at an upscale, dimly lit restaurant downtown—neutral territory where powerful people traded favors under the guise of casual dining. I arrived ten minutes early, impeccably dressed in a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit, my posture unyielding and my expression an impenetrable mask of calm authority.

Marcus Thorne was already seated in a corner booth, swirling a glass of scotch with corporate arrogance. As I slid into the booth opposite him, he offered a thin, predatory smile.
"Commissioner Bennett," Thorne purred. "I must admit, I admire your rapid ascent. It’s quite a leap from drafting minor zoning permits for your father’s failing firm to managing state infrastructure."
"Spare me the flattery, Marcus," I cut straight through his pleasantries. "You sent a package of fabricated documents to my office hoping to blackmail me into shelving the zoning review. Let's talk about why you're really here."
Thorne’s smile flickered, replaced by a hard, calculating glint. He leaned forward. "You always were sharp, Claire. But brilliance without protection is just a liability. Those documents might be forgies in a courtroom, but in the court of public opinion—right before the senate vote—they are devastating. All the public will see is 'State Commissioner Linked to Construction Fraud.'"

"And what do you want in exchange for keeping these files out of the press?" I asked calmly.
"Simple," Thorne smiled triumphantly. "You table the statewide housing proposal indefinitely under the guise of an 'environmental review delay,' and my associates ensure these files quietly disappear forever."
