Chapter 38 - The Unexpected ReunionFollowing the symposium, I took a quiet evening to walk along the National Mall, watching the illuminated dome of the U.S. Capitol reflect against the calm surface of the reflecting pool. The crisp winter air felt refreshing against my face.

As I paused near the World War II Memorial, admiring the stone arches lit against the twilight sky, a familiar voice called out from behind me.
"Excuse me... is this the brilliant executive director everyone at the conference was raving about?"
I spun around, a look of utter astonishment washing over my features. Standing a few feet away, wearing a heavy wool winter coat and a warm, loving smile, was Julian—a brilliant municipal policy strategist I had collaborated with briefly during a regional housing conference in Chicago two years prior. We had shared an instant, profound intellectual connection, but distance and my intense focus on rebuilding my life had kept our paths from crossing since.
"Julian?" I gasped, stepping forward. "What are you doing in Washington?"
"I’m consulting for the federal housing committee this winter," Julian explained, stepping closer and offering a warm embrace. "I saw your keynote speech this morning, Claire. It was breathtaking. You completely captivated the entire convention center."
"I had no idea you were even in the city," I laughed, feeling a delightful flutter of warmth in my chest. "How long have you been in D.C.?"
"Long enough to realize I've missed you a hell of a lot over the past two years," Julian smiled softly, his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the monument lights. "Listen, I know you’re probably exhausted from your keynote and your meetings, but there’s a wonderful little bistro two blocks away. Would you do me the honor of grabbing dinner with me tonight?"
May you like
I looked at Julian—smart, deeply respectful, emotionally mature, and entirely appreciative of my strength rather than intimidated by it. It was the exact opposite of the transactional, conditional relationships of my past.
"I would love nothing more," I smiled.
