Chapter 27 - Turning the TablesVictor blinked in surprise, recognizing me from municipal board meetings. "Well, look who it is. Little Miss County Social Worker. Put that phone away before—"

"Before what, Victor? Before you add felony extortion, witness intimidation, and assault of a minor to your upcoming federal RICO indictment?" I interrupted, my voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet suburban street.
Victor’s face tightened with sudden apprehension. "You don't know what you're talking about, lady. This is a private family matter."
"It stopped being a private matter the moment you threatened my brother and attempted to coerce a false confession using physical intimidation," I stepped closer, holding the phone steady. "Furthermore, Victor, my entire conversation with emergency dispatch has been streaming live to the county police department’s active response database for the past four minutes. Listen closely."
From down the street, the faint, wailing shriek of approaching sirens began to echo through the evening air, growing louder with every passing second. Red and blue emergency lights flashed brilliantly against the neighboring rooftops.
Victor’s associate panicked, glancing wildly toward the street. "Boss, the cops! We gotta get out of here!"
"You're not going anywhere until county deputies take your statement," I said coldly, stepping directly into their path.

Victor cursed under his breath, glaring daggers at Raymond and me. "This isn't over, Bennett! You think you've won, but you're swimming with sharks!"
With that, the two thugs scrambled back into their black SUV, threw it into reverse, bounced over the grass lawn, and sped away down the suburban street just as two marked county police cruisers turned the corner with lights flashing blindingly.
