CHAPTER 10 — THE CHILD WHO WAS ERASED

CHAPTER 10 — THE CHILD WHO WAS ERASED

The birth certificate sat on the table between us.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes a piece of paper can weigh more than a thousand words.

The name was clear.

The date was clear.

The father's name was clear.

Noah Carter.

Again.

Another secret.

Another child.

Another part of his life I never knew existed.

I looked at Noah.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't confused.

He looked terrified.

And that was the moment I realized...

He knew.

"Emma..."

I raised my hand.

"Don't."

My voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

That scared him more than anger would have.

"How many?"

Noah swallowed.

"What?"

"How many things are there that I don't know?"

His face changed.

"Emma."

"No."

I looked at the document.

"First Lucas."

A tear fell.

"Then this."

I pointed.

"How many more secrets?"

"There aren't any."

I laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

"You said that before."

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because they were true.

Ethan carefully picked up the document.

"There's something strange."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"The hospital that issued this birth certificate."

He checked the information.

"It closed nine years ago."

"So?"

"So the records were sealed."

Noah looked up.

"Why?"

Ethan continued.

"Because this wasn't a normal birth."

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

He hesitated.

Then:

"The child was placed under protective custody immediately after birth."

Silence.

I stared.

"Protective custody?"

Noah looked away.

And that was enough.

He knew.

"What happened?"

His voice was barely audible.

"The baby was sick."

"Whose baby?"

Noah didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Whose baby, Noah?"

Finally...

He whispered:

"Natalie's."

The room went silent.

Everything felt impossible.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another connection between Noah and Natalie.

"She had another baby?"

Noah nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Before Lucas."

My heart sank.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Noah closed his eyes.

"Because I didn't know."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"I didn't know the child existed."

I shook my head.

"How?"

"Because Natalie disappeared after giving birth."

"She disappeared?"

"Yes."

"And you never looked?"

His expression broke.

"I did."

"Then what did you find?"

"Nothing."

I looked at the certificate.

"But someone knew."

Noah nodded.

"Someone knew."

The next day, we discovered the child's name.

A girl.

Born eight years before Lucas.

Her name was:

Sophie Carter.

The name felt strange.

A person who existed.

A child connected to us.

A child nobody knew about.

A child who had vanished.

Ethan searched through records.

Then he found something.

"Sophie wasn't adopted."

"What?"

"She was transferred."

"Where?"

He looked at the screen.

"A private medical facility."

My stomach tightened.

"The same place where Marcus was treated?"

Ethan looked at me.

"Yes."

Everything connected.

The same facility.

The same people.

The same secrets.

Noah couldn't sleep.

I knew because I found him sitting in the nursery at three in the morning.

Holding the small blue blanket.

The one I thought Natalie had taken.

The one my mother made.

I stood in the doorway.

For a moment...

I saw the old Noah.

The man who used to dream about fatherhood.

The man who cried during our first ultrasound.

The man who whispered promises.

Then I remembered.

Promises were easy.

Actions were everything.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He didn't look back.

"I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"That every child connected to me ended up hurt."

The words surprised me.

Because they weren't excuses.

They were pain.

"I lost Lucas."

A pause.

"Then I lost Sophie."

His voice broke.

"And then I almost lost your son."

I stayed silent.

Because there was something I finally understood.

Noah wasn't hiding secrets because he didn't care.

He was hiding them because he believed he was cursed.

But that still didn't erase what happened.

"You should have trusted me."

"I know."

"You should have let me stand beside you."

"I know."

He turned around.

His eyes were red.

"I was trying to carry everything alone."

"And look where that got you."

He looked at the nursery.

"I lost everyone."

Later that morning, Marcus contacted us.

He wanted to meet.

Alone.

When we arrived, he looked worse.

Older.

Tired.

Like he had been fighting ghosts for years.

"I found something."

He handed Noah an envelope.

"What is this?"

"Proof."

"Of what?"

Marcus looked at me.

"Why Natalie did all this."

Inside were old documents.

Medical records.

Court papers.

Police reports.

Then I saw a name.

A name that made everything make sense.

Sophie Carter.

Marcus pointed.

"She wasn't just Noah's daughter."

I looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"Sophie was born with a rare medical condition."

Noah stared.

"Yes."

"She needed expensive treatment."

"Yes."

Marcus continued.

"Natalie blamed Noah."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Noah refused to use illegal money from the corruption network."

The room became quiet.

Noah looked down.

"I told her I wouldn't become a criminal to save our daughter."

Marcus nodded.

"And Natalie never forgave him."

I understood.

The revenge.

The obsession.

The anger.

But then...

Something didn't fit.

"Where is Sophie now?"

Marcus looked at me.

His expression changed.

"That's the part you won't like."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

Marcus whispered:

"Sophie is alive."

Noah froze.

"Where?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

"She's been living under another name."

"With who?"

Marcus looked toward the door.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then he said:

"With Natalie."

The room went cold.

"That's impossible."

Noah stood.

"You said she disappeared."

"She did."

Marcus looked at him.

"But she didn't lose Sophie."

My hands moved protectively over my stomach.

"So Natalie had her daughter all these years?"

Marcus nodded.

"And she used Sophie as leverage."

Noah looked devastated.

"Leverage for what?"

Marcus stared at him.

"To make you come back."

Silence.

"She didn't want revenge because you left."

A pause.

"She wanted revenge because you chose Emma."

That night, we received a package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was a small video file.

We played it.

Natalie appeared on screen.

But she wasn't alone.

A teenage girl sat beside her.

Sophie.

Older.

Confused.

Scared.

Natalie smiled.

"Hello, Noah."

Noah stepped closer.

"I know you found the truth."

Her smile disappeared.

"You always were good at finding things."

She looked at me.

"Especially things that weren't yours."

My stomach tightened.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

"Emma, you think I took your husband."

She smiled.

"But the truth is..."

"I took him back."

The video ended.

A second later...

Another message appeared.

A location.

And one sentence.

COME ALONE, NOAH. OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR DAUGHTERS AGAIN.

I looked at Noah.

He looked at me.

For the first time...

He wasn't a firefighter.

He wasn't a husband.

He wasn't a hero.

He was just a father.

A father about to walk into a trap.

May you like

And I knew...

Natalie was waiting for him.
